HW 9
12.3
Serum-containing media stimulates cell growth by hormones and growth factors,
enhances cell attachment of proteins (like collagen), and provides transport proteins
that carry hormones, minerals, and lipids. However, it is expensive, variable, may
cause further complications in the cultivation and downstream processes, and could
be contaminated with viruses.
Serum-free media reduces the cost of media, eliminates protein purification
problems, improves reproducibility, and reduces the chance of contamination.

a)
-Q*dS = k*X*S*dV = k*X*S*A*dz
(Integrate over S and H)
ln(S/S0) = (-k*X*A*H)/Q = -k*X*
ln(2/40) = (-1)*(5)*
= .599 days = 14.3795 hours
V = Q* = 2*14.3795 = 28.759 L = .028759 m^3
V = A*H = pi*D^2*H/4
.028759 = pi*(.2)^2*H/4
H = .915 m
b)
P = Yp/s*(S0 S) = 4*(40 2) = 152 mg/L
Pr = Q*P = 2*152 = 304 mg/h

13.3
X*q02 = kLa*(C* - C)
C = .1* C* = .8 mg/L
q02 = .2 mmol O2 = .2*32 = 6.4 mg
X = (20*(8 - .8))/(6.4) = 22.5 g/L
