Starbucks
Memo #1-Create Constancy of Purpose
Background
The first point, constancy of purpose, has three main goals to achieve: to become/remain
competitive, to create/provide jobs, and to remain a business/maintain solvency. It is focused on
much more than short term profits/goals and it seeks to ensure that longer term needs are met and
sustained. In practice, this means providing all employees with a statement of the aims and
purposes of the company. Top management sets the precedent for the values and beliefs of the
organization and are responsible for helping the employees join in with the shared vision of the
company.

employees and many managers are unhappy with the amount of pay they receive. One of the
three goals of constancy of purpose is to provide jobs. Starbucks needs to improve its
communication of its mission to its employees and increase managers income for better
employee retention. Implementing those improvements will create better constancy of purpose
for Starbucks.
Target Condition
Starbucks must begin to make sure their top managers are bought into the mission of Starbucks,
because only then can they truly impress it upon their direct reports. To fully adopt and

implement constancy of purpose Starbucks will collectively come back to the reason they began
making coffee in the first place. They need to realign their actions so they can become
committed to the needs of their employees and their continued growth and employment.
