TUTORIAL 5: Time Domain Analysis of Systems
1. A Linear Time Invariant (LTI) system is specified by system equation
( D 2 + 4 D + 4) y (t ) = Df (t )
a) Find the characteristic polynomial, characteristic equation, characteristic roots and
Characteristic modes of this system.
b) Find y0(t) the zero-input component of the response y(t) for t 0, if the initial conditions
are y0 (0) = 3 , and y 0 (0) = 4 .
2. Evaluate the following integrals:

3. Find the unit impulse response of the LTI system specified by the equation
( D + 1)( D 2 + 5 D + 6) y (t ) = (5D + 9) f (t )
4. Compute the convolution y[n ] = x[n ] h[n ] of the following pairs of signals:
a. x[n ] = n u[n ], h[n ] = n u[n ],
b. x[n] and h[n] depicted below:

c. x[n ] = u[n + 4] u[n 1], h[n ] = 2 n u[2 n ]

d. x[n ] = cos( 2 n )u[n ],
h[n ] = (1) n u[n 1]
5. Compute the convolution y( t ) = x ( t ) h ( t ) of the following pairs of signals:
a. x ( t ) = e 3t u ( t ), h ( t ) = u ( t + 3)
b. x(t)and h(t) depicted below:

c. x ( t ) = 2 t 2 (u ( t + 1) u ( t 1)), h ( t ) = 2u ( t + 2)
d. x ( t ) = cos(2t )(u ( t + 1) u ( t 1)), h ( t ) = e t u ( t )
6. Evaluate the step response for the LTI systems represented by the following impulse
responses:
n

1
c. h[n ] = u[n ]

a. h ( t ) = e t ,
b. h(t ) = u (1 + t )

d.

2
h[n ] = [1 (0.9) n ](u[n ] u[n 2])

7. The step response s [n] of a discrete-time LTI system is given by s[n] = u [n ], 0 < < l
Find the impulse response h [n] of the system.

8.

Consider a continuous-time LTI system whose step response is given by s (t ) = e u (t)

Determine and sketch the output of this system to the input x ( t ) = 1, t < 1.

9. Consider

systems

responses

h1[n ] =

u[n ]

and h 2 [n ] = u[n ] + u[n 1] .

These two systems are cascaded as shown in fig. Let x[n] = u[n].

a. Compute y[n] by first computing w[n ] = x[n ] h 1 [n ] and then computing y[n ] = w[n ] h 2 [n ] ;
that is y[n ] = x[n ] h 1 [n ] h 2 [n ].
b. Now, find y[n] by first convolving h1[n] and h2[n] to obtain g[n ] = h 1 [n ] h 2 [n ] and then
convolving x[n] with g[n] to obtain y[n ] = x[n ] [h 1 [n ] h 2 [n ]].

10. By apply the shift property of convolution, find the systems response (i.e. zero-state
response) given that h(t) =e-t u(t) and that the input f(t) is as
shown in Fig . below

11. Find and sketch c(t) = f(t)* g(t) for the pairs of functions shown below.
