Show clearly all working steps

1. A 400 KVA, 3300/415 V, single phase core type transformer has Bm =

1.1T, = 3A/mm2, Kw = 0.35 and Aw = 2Ai. Calculate the number of L.V
turns/limb.

2. A single phase, 50 Hz, shell type transformer has B m = 1.2T, = 4A/mm2, Kw =

0.3, Ai = 0.04m2 and Aw = 0.3m2. Calculate the rating of the transformer. The full
load efficiency of the transformer is 94%. Estimate the full load efficiency of a
transformer with the above dimensions increased by a factor of 2.

3. A transformer has a temperature rise of 200 C after 1 hour and 350 C after 2 hours
full load. The copper loss is 2.5 times the core loss. Estimate the final temperature
rise, after a consecutive loading of 1.5 hours at full load, 0.5 hours at half full load
and 1 hour at 25% overload.

4. Discuss in detail the construction and operation of the following types of special
motors. The discussion should also include their applications
(i) Brushless dc motors
(ii) Stepper motor

5. Give a detailed description of an experiment to be carried out for the separation

of hysteresis and eddy current losses. Your discussion should include the theory and
relevant calculations.

6. A 0.1Kw universal (series) motor has the following constants:

Armature resistance

r r = 12

Series field resistance

r s = 36

Effective armature inductance

L rr = 0.3H

Series field inductance

L ss = 0.3H

Maximum mutual inductance between rotor and astator

L sr =

0.71H

Determine the input current and speed when the load torque applied to the motor is
0.18Nm (a) when connected to a 200V d.c supply and (b) when connected to a
200V, 50 Hz a.c supply.
Neglect windage, friction and all core losses.
7. (a) Show that energy under the hysteris loop represents energy loss per m 3.
(b) A magnetic core has a B-H curve shown in figure question seven. If the core
takes the shape of mean diameter 50mm and cross-sectional area 25 square mm,
and if supply frequency is 1Khz, calculate the power loss in the core.
