Behaving justly is not an easy task.

In the first place, the word


just connotes many things. One can be just morally, socially or legally.
Thereisnosuchthingasbeingconsistentlyjust.Justnessisrelative.Itis
differentfromoneculturetoanother.Hence,insayingthatIbelievethat
one must be just at all times, I am speaking in the Philippines sense of
justness.
Tostart,thePhilippinesisaChristiancountry.MajorityofFilipinos
are Catholic. I am a Catholic. For me being just is equivalent to giving
people what is due them. For example, if a person kills another, it is
appropriatethattheybegivenapenalty.Before,deathpenaltyisimposedbut
since the legislators are influenced by Catholicism, death penalty was
eventually abolished. Now murderers are given a lifetime imprisonment. In
addition,beingjustiswhatthesocietydictatesus.Thesocietythatwegrew
in,influencewhoweare,whatwebelieveisjustandwhyshouldwebejust.
Forinstance,Iamafraidtodisobeythelawsbecausedoingsowillmakemean
unjustperson.Justnessisingrainedinourlegalsystem.Article19ofthe
CivilCodestatesthat,Everypersonmust,intheexerciseofhisrightsand
intheperformanceofhisduties,actwithjustice,giveeveryonehisdue,and
observehonestyandgoodfaith.Thisarticleprovidestheconceptsofjustice
andfairness.Justnessinourcountrymorally,legallyandsociallyspeaking
overlaps each other because Catholicism shapes our culture and our legal
system.
Asidefrommyfaith,Ibelieveonemustbejustatalltimesbecause
doinggoodandbeingfairgivesthefeelingofhappiness.IfIgiveaperson
something that he or she does not deserve, I am washed with a feeling of
disappointmentandremorse.Further,Ibelieveinthegoldenrulethatdonot
dountootherswhatyoudonotwantotherstodountoyou.SoifIactjustly
withmyfellowmen,thenthereisnoreasonforthemtotreatmebadly.
