The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Lectionary 24
Holy Communion (Now the Feast)

INTRODUCTION

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE Prelude in Eb from The Well-Tempered Clavier

J. S. Bach

WELCOME AND
COLLECTION OF PRAYERS and THANKSGIVINGS
INVOCATION
All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the
presiding minister begins.

The grumbling of the Pharisees and the scribes in todays gospel is

actually our holy hope: This Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them.
That our God wills to seek and to save the lost is not only a holy hope, it is
our only hope. As Pauls first letter to Timothy reminds us, The saying is
sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to
save sinners. Thanks be to God.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags

and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

KYRIE

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
A prayer for the 15th anniversary of the Attacks of 9-11
For Victims of Violence:
Holy God, in Christ Jesus you joined yourself to all who suffer unjustly at
the hands of the violent. With your cleansing love bring healing and
strength to all such sufferers, especially the families of those who died in
the attacks of September 11, 2001. Lift them up in in body, mind, and
spirit with the sure and certain hope of your final victory over sin and
death. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

GREETING

HYMN OF PRAISE: Now the Feast and Celebration

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
O God, overflowing with mercy and compassion, you lead back to yourself
all those who go astray. Preserve your people in your loving care, that we
may reject whatever is contrary to you and may follow all things that
sustain our life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
Please be seated.
BLESSING FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
Students, teachers, school workers and members of Trinitys Spiritual
Formation Team are asked to come forward for a blessing at the beginning
of a new school year.
A reading from First Corinthians. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the
same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there
are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in
everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common
good. (1 Cor. 12:4-7)
A reading from Proverbs. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not
rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will
make straight your paths. (Prov. 3:5-6)
For the marvels of your creation,
we praise you, O God.
For the opportunity to explore and study,
we praise you, O God.
For those who guide us, teachers and mentors,
we praise you, O God.
Teach us your ways and guide us in your path,
for you are the creator of all that is seen and unseen.
Amen.
Let us pray for all who are beginning a new school year, that both students
and teachers will be blessed in their academic endeavors. Almighty God,
you give wisdom and knowledge. Help us to be eager to learn, especially to
learn how much you love us, so that we may love you back by making the
world better, and so that we may love others as you love us; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

God of wisdom, your Son came among us as a teacher. Send your blessing
on all who are engaged in the work of education and spiritual formation:
give them clearness of vision and freshness of thought, and enable them so
to train the hearts and minds of their students that they may grow in
wisdom and be prepared to face the challenges of life; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
People of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, will you pray for and help
those who teach and learn, especially those who carry out our
congregation's teaching ministry to children, youth, adults, and families?
Will you enthusiastically celebrate the work they do and commit yourselves
to growth in knowledge of the love of God?
We will, and we ask God to help us.
I declare this year of Sunday School opened. In the name of the Father, and
of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Exodus 32:7-14

The LORD said to Moses, Go down at once! Your people, whom

you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; 8they have
been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have
cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed
to it, and said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of
the land of Egypt! 9The LORD said to Moses, I have seen this people,
how stiff-necked they are. 10Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn
hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great
nation.
11But Moses implored the LORD his God, and said, O LORD, why does
your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land
of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12Why should the
Egyptians say, It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them
in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn
from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your
people. 13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you
swore to them by your own self, saying to them, I will multiply your
descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I
will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever. 14And the
LORD changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his
people.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
PSALM 14
Refrain:

Jesus came into the world to save sinnersof whom I am the foremost.
16
But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost,
Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to
those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. 17To the King of
the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and
ever. Amen.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
We invite you to please stand for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

(cantor sings the first time, congregation repeats)

1

Fools say in their hearts, There | is no God.

They are corrupt, every deed is vile; there is no one who does | any
good.
2
The LORD looks down from heaven up- | on us all,
to see if there is anyone who is wise, who seeks | after God. R
3

They have all proved faithless; all alike | have turned bad;
there is none who does good; | no, not one.
4
Have they no knowledge, all those | evildoers
who eat up my people like bread and do not call up- | on the
LORD?
5
See how they trem- | ble with fear,
because God is in the company | of the righteous.
6
Your aim is to confound the plans of | the afflicted,
but the LORD| is their refuge.
7
Oh, that Israels deliverance would come | out of Zion!
When the LORD restores the fortunes of the people, Jacob will
rejoice and Israel | will be glad. R
SECOND READING 1 Timothy 1:12-17
12

I am grateful to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me,

because he judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, 13even
though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence.
But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14and the
grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in
Christ Jesus. 15The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ

GOSPEL: Luke 15:1-10

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
1

Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to
[Jesus.] 2And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying,
This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.
3So he told them this parable: 4Which one of you, having a hundred
sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the
wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5When he has
found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6And when he comes
home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice

with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. 7Just so, I tell you, there
will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninetynine righteous persons who need no repentance.
8Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does
not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?
9
When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors,
saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. 10Just so,
I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner
who repents.

Please kneel or sit as you are able.

Each petition ends with:
Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in
your mercy; through your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
CONFESSION OF SIN AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

another.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us (ELW 789)
APOSTLES CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.

Silence to allow self-reflection

Most merciful God
We confess that we have not loved you all of our heart, mind, soul, and
strength; we have not loved others as you have loved us. In your
compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and
left undone; and so fill us and move us by your Spirit that we may live
and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us; God
calls us to receive forgiveness through Christ, to turn from sin, to be
reconciled to God, and to live in peace with others. As a called and
ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore
declare to: God entirely forgives all of your sins. In the name of the Father,
and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Please stand to greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.

PEACE

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Reconciled to God through Christ, let us reconcile with one another.

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.

Rejoicing in the Spirits work among us, let us pray for the church, the
world, and all those in need.

Please be seated.

OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)

PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

OFFERING PRAYER
God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures
forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine.
Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your
gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord
Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await
his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and
unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of
Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever. Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as our loving parent as we
pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
