Rio de Janeiro
It is located in southeast Brazil. Its name is Portuguese for river of
January. Much of the city lies between mountains and water. The massive
statue known as Christ the Redeemer tops Corcovado Mountain. The
statue was built to commemorate Brazils first 100 years of independence
from Portugal.
Rio is the most populous city in Brazil after Soa Paulo. The inhabitants
of Rio de Janeiro are called Carioas and are characterized within Brazil as
fun-loving, sensual, and easygoing.I also boasts one of the busiest ports
and airports in the nation.
Carnival, which begins four days before Ash Wednesday, is Brazils major
holiday and Rio has the best carnival in the country.
Parks are everywhere in the city. The internationally known Botonical
Garden cover 50 hectares of natural forest, with the tallest palm tree in the
world and 5,000 varieties of plants.
