GRE Center’s approach to vocabulary building. You need to enrich your vocabulary in order to master the verbal section of GRE. There were two special types of questions called Analogy and Antonym in the old GRE test, which were direct assessment of vocabulary. In revised GRE the focus has been given on verbal “reasoning’, which means your ability to understand the application and actual meaning of the word in the context. At the same time, revised GRE has become much more reading-based. Yet, vocabulary is something which you cannot avoid. What book(s) to study for enhancing vocabulary? GRE Center recommends "Word Power Made Easy” by Norman Lewis. Etymology is the science of understanding words with their appropriate roots (mainly Greek and Latin) and different suffixes and prefixes. You can learn a large number of words with knowing roots of only few words. Leaming words with etymology is a fun also. Here is a random example: VTerra = earth Inter = to put something in “earth”. + cer" | ing something out of “earth”, 35-59 cx sat living on land. eos = Territory = a country Terrain = a piece of ground having specific characteristic (a mountainous terrain) Terrarium = place where living plants/animals are kept. All of the above words are related to “terra”. vvvvvy Another strategy : Learning words with groups There is a famous vocabulary book “Vocabulary for Dummies” which not only discusses words with their etymological breakdowns, but also organizes contents with groups. Now, the question is, should | learn words with etymology, or according to groups, or just randomly? The answer is, both with etymology and with groups. Read from computer screen. ‘Since the original GRE exam will be taken by you in computer, it is very important to grow a habit of reading from computer screen. Sometimes people may experience monitor-fatigue (exit sary fre efeer cree FT 7 FFE), which must be handled carefully. It is not alvays. from just looking at the screen; rather it may be from observing texts, figures and objects like bars or lines in the data interpretation type problems in the quantitative section, very attentively. Reading articles from news paper: The most popular means of enriching vocabulary by reading newspaper is the Ealtorial of the Daily Star (www thedailystar.net). You can try reading American news papers; however, reading local newspaper gives you more comfort to catch up the contents. Maintain personal note book Another effective way to enhance vocabulary is to maintain a personal notebook of vocabulary. Whenever you come across a new word, please know the meaning of the word and jot down (Ewrite down) in the notebook. You can write the same sentence in which you first came across, (come across = xe oxive “rent) the word. For instance, if you read in the paper “RAB nabbed napping kidnapper (=¥%cr erst woe cEMea! STE He aI vERR) and if the word nab and nap are new to you, please write these words in your personal note book and by all means, with this, same sentence. nab = seize suddenly; * nap = sleep for a short period (usually not in bed). <*> Words leamt in this way are usually remembered easily. Prepare flash cards. Make your own one. Flash card method is a well appreciated (=recognized with special value) by everybody EQUITABLE Unfortunately if you start preparing flash card for every single word you read in GRE, you may need a large box to carry them. That is why you need to make a list of ‘really hard to remember’ words, and prepare flash card for them. Some rules to be a good flash card user. > Make your own flashcard. Write everything with your hand. Don't make the card too small. 3°x3" or bigger is perfect. Many software dictionaries are available which you can install. In the download section of the website of GRE Center you will get these two dictionaries: ‘+ Pocket Oxford Dictionary (POD) ‘+ Word Web Dictionary (WW) The POD is a small software but it shows you etymology of the terms. Also, You can see all the words after the word you searched, in a single screen. In order to see the meaning of a word please click on a word. The WW is even more powerful. It is like a mini encyclopedia, with synonyms, antonyms, and lots of examples. To see the meaning of a word, just write the word in look up box. If you want to know the meaning of a word present in description of a previous word, just double click on the word. You can press “Ctrl + Left arrow key” navigate all the previous words looked for. The shortcut to reach the look up box is Alt+L. Printed Bangla dictionaries: For English to Bangla you can go for either AT Dev's student's favorite dictionary or Bangla Academy dictionary. A website of English to Bangla dictionary: Www.bdwebguide.com/bengalidictionary. php Printed English Dictionary with CD: The richest dictionary that you can collect for the entire life is “Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary with CD*. You can collect the original dictionary with CD from book shops in New Market, Dhaka. The inferior quality photocopy edition is also available, which we discourage you to buy. This book is available in Nilkhet and New Market book stores at Dhaka. This book has been used as “Number 1 Book” for vocabulary building tool by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Another book named "Word Smart for Fy couche A tary GRE" (also by same publisher) is also a very good book. This book is available in Bangladesh. Failure to continue vocabulary building Only a few students actually can follow the ideal pace (=speed) of vocabulary learning. Most of the students start learning with extreme impetus (© a sudden force that moves something along) and with a disposition (=attitude of mind) as if he will finish the entire words of human lexicon (=dictionary) ina month or two, but ends up quitting shortly. The rule of thumb for GRE vocabulary is, learn few, but learn regularly. ‘Sometimes students feel intimidated (=become timid (=te)) by looking at their progress if they count the progress in terms of alphabets covered. For example, this book has 50 word-lists and first 5 are with letter A, so, a student may feel that he is finishing lists after lists but the words with letter “a” are not finishing. Many students adopt their own means of overcoming this type of frustration.
