Flender N-EUPEX Selection Process

Determine HP Capacity Per 100 RPM:
1. Select the appropriate service factor (SF) for
your application (see page 3).
2. Calculate the coupling HP capacity per 100 RPM:
HP 10
0 SF
HP per 100 RPM =
RPM
Select a coupling with the same or higher
capacity from the HP per 100 RPM column from
the tables on pages 611.

 Check Bore Limitations:

1. Determine each hubs maximum bore diameter
for the selected coupling from the tables on
pages 611.
2. Confirm that both shaft ends of your application
do not exceed the maximum coupling bore
diameters.

 Check Speed Limitations:

1. Determine the maximum speed of the selected
coupling from the tables on pages 611.
2. Confirm your actual speed does not exceed the
couplings maximum speed.

 Check Critical Dimensions:

Check the couplings OD, overall length, shaft
separation, etc. to determine if it will fit your
application.

 Check Overload Capacity:

Example:
 Motor40 HP; 3,600 RPM; 1.875" shaft
 Centrifugal pump1.375" shaft
 DBSE = 3.5 inches
Operation is 8 hours per day

Determine HP Capacity Per 100 RPM:

1. An N-EUPEX coupling is selected to connect an
electric motor to a centrifugal pump. The
application and hours of operation result in
SF = 1.00
40 100 1
2. HP per 100 RPM = = 1.11 HP
3,600
Since a (Type H) spacer coupling is needed, an
H 95 is selected with a rating of 1.5 HP per 100 RPM.

 Check Bore Limitations:

The motor shaft is 1.875" while the H 95 maximum
bore is only 1.625". Therefore, the selection must
be changed to an H 125 with a 2.125" maximum bore.

 Check Speed Limitations:

The H 125 has a maximum speed of 5,000 RPMOK.

 Check Critical Dimensions:

Specify the 3.5" S3 dimension. All other
dimensions are OK.

 Check Overload Capacity:

Service factor was sufficient to handle expected
overloads.

1. Maximum torque may occur for a short period of

time (i.e. during start-up, motor short circuit, etc.).

If further assistance is required, contact your local

Flender representative or Flender sales office.

2. This maximum torque should not exceed three

times the N-EUPEX couplings nominal torque
rating.

NOTE: For additional information, see NEMA

Motor Reference and N-EUPEX Selection Chart
(pages 5 & 10).

N-EUPEX Flexible CouplingsService Factor Guildelines

General service factor guidelines are based on AGMA tables developed by assessing the input and output factors, as well as
the demand of various applications. Specific design data or vibration calculations can be obtained from Flender, upon request.
Service factors for gear drives driven by motors (hydraulic or electric) and turbines (steam or gas) see Note 3.

N-EUPEX Flexible Couplings

Summary of Basic Types
N-EUPEX couplings are the ultimate solution for a wide variety of applications. They
are extremely reliable in the transmission of torque and excellent for overload
protection. Their unique design makes them quick and simple to install, and allows
for easy inspection and replacement of the flexible elements. The synthetic rubber
composition of the flexible elements provides excellent dampening characteristics.
The N-EUPEX features provide a wide range of benefits.
No lubrication is needed, reducing maintenance costs and contamination concerns
Misalignment protection reduces excessive wear on driving/driven equipment
Torsional vibration and shock loads are dampened to extend the life of
connected equipment
Higher torque density and bore capacity than most other elastomeric designs
Torque is uniformly transmitted to give higher reliability & longer coupling life
Compact design results in low weight and low mass moment of inertia
No special tools are needed for installation or alignment
Available in both failsafe and non-failsafe designs
The more common N-EUPEX coupling types are listed below. Various additional special types are also available.
Type B (two piece design)
Type A (three piece designreplace flexible
elements without disassembly of power train)

B Sizes 58 to 280

N-EUPEX Types BDS and ADS Flexible CouplingsNon Fail-safe Design

Summary of Basic Types
N-EUPEX ADS, BDS and HDS couplings provide the same characteristics,
features, benefits and serviceability as the standard N-EUPEX couplings.
However, their unique design gives them an additional dimension. Recesses
are equally distributed around the circumference of the flexible element hub
(part 1). The flexible elements slip into these recesses.
If the application fails, the pin hub (parts 4 and parts 2/3) continue to rotate
and the flexible elements are forced out of their recesses. Since there is no
metal to metal contact, no sparks are created.
This coupling requires no special tools for installation or alignment.
CAUTION: The N-EUPEX-DS design is not intended to be used as a torque
limiting device.

N-EUPEX Flexible Couplings

Common Practices
N-EUPEX Couplings:

Assembly and Disassembly From Shafts:

Made of GG-25 (high quality) cast iron

A load up to three times the couplings nominal torque
rating is allowable for a short period of time (i.e. during
start-up, motor short circuit, etc.)
Ambient temperature range is between 22F and
176F.

N-EUPEX type A, D, P, and H couplings allow shafts and

machines to be assembled and dismantled without
disassembly of the power train.
N-EUPEX type A, ADS, D and P couplings require close
attention to dimension P in tables 6.1, 8.1 and 11.1. This
is the amount of space required to remove the bolts
during assembly/disassembly of parts 2 and 3.

Flexible Coupling Elements:

Standard N-EUPEX couplings have synthetic rubber

(Perbunan, Shore 80) flexible elements.
Applications involving reversing operations, very fast
acceleration rates or very high shock loads (i.e.
reciprocating pumps, reciprocating compressors, etc.)
can be supplied with oversize flexible elements (up to
and including size 200) to minimize torsional play.

Balancing:

Arrangement of the Coupling Parts:

Normally, the flexible element hub (part 1) is mounted on the
motor shaft and the pin hub (part 2 or 4) is mounted on the
driven shaft. However, this theory should be reversed when:
The flexible element hub is above the pin hub on a
vertical application
The driven shaft is abnormally short and prevents the
pin ring (part 3) from being fully withdrawn to allow
proper replacement of the flexible elements, etc.

N-EUPEX coupling hubs are balanced to AGMA class 8

in one plane, not taking the keyway into account. Upon
order, couplings can be balanced to AGMA class 9 in
two planes, if quieter operation is desired.
Spacer coupling (Type H) parts 5 and 7 are balanced to
AGMA class 9 in one plane; part 6 is balanced to AGMA
class 9 in two planes. (Note: Balancing to AGMA class 9
is only possible on coupling parts with finished bores,
stated operating speeds and specified with or without
the keyway cut.)
It must also be expressly stated if balancing is required
with a full parallel key.

Misalignment:
Misalignment may result from improper alignment during
assembly and/or forces generated by the drive train (i.e. heat
expansion, bent shafts, soft machine frame, etc.)

Bores:
Based on table 12.1, AGMA shaft tolerances and bore fits,
the following will be assumed unless otherwise specifically
stated:
Up to (and including) 4 inch bore will be provided with
a Clearance fit, (table 12.1) unless otherwise specified.
Over 4 inch bore will be provided with an Interference
fit, (table 12.1) unless otherwise specified.
Maximum bore diameters are based on using square
keystock.

Axial Misalignment:
Axial misalignment DKa (figure 12.1) is allowable within the
range between the maximum and minimum S1 / S2 dimension, (see tables 6.1 to 11.1).

Angular Misalignment:
Angular misalignment DKw (figure 12.2) is allowable within
the Maximum Misalignment for the size, (table 14.1).

Radial Misalignment:
Securing the Coupling:
N-EUPEX couplings are provided with parallel keyways according to the appropriate specification as follows:
Shaft to Hub Fits (per table 12.1) will apply.
One taped hole (with set screw included) will be located over the keyway, with the following exceptions:
Size 58 (part 1) 0.590 and (part 4) 0.708;
Size 68 (part 1) and (part 4) 0.787; Size 80 0.984;
Size 95 1.496; Size 110 (part 2) 1.181;
Size 125 (part 9) 0.787; and Size 140 0.984 where the
tapped hole will be located away from the keyway.

Radial misalignment DKr (figure 12.3) is allowable within the

Maximum Misalignment for the size, (table 14.1).
Caution!
Both angular and radial misalignment may occur at the
same time. But, the total of both misalignments may not
exceed the maximum allowable value of either the angular
or radial misalignment.

Vibration Calculations:
Torsional vibration calculations can be supplied by Flender
upon request.

Flange-mounted Pulleys or Flywheels:

Check the allowable circumferential speeds of the flangemounted pulley or flywheel on an N-EUPEX type D or E.
Pulleys, etc. supplied by Flender are usually mounted
on an N-EUPEX flexible element flange (part 10).

Supporting the Shaft Ends:

The shaft ends, connected by the coupling, must be

supported directly in front of and behind the coupling.

Installing and Putting Into Service:

Refer to the installation instructions on page 14.

Questions:
Contact Flender with any question regarding N-EUPEX
couplings.

N-EUPEX Flexible Couplings

Installation
Installation:

Step 8:

Remove all N-EUPEX components from their packaging.

Loosely assemble the coupling on a convenient surface.
Check to confirm that all mating surfaces and parts are compatible (i.e. bores are correct and on the proper hub; there is
proper clearance for the assembly; the keystock matches the
keyways; all the coupling parts, flexible elements, etc. are at
hand; the proper assembly tools are available, etc.)

Check radial alignment by placing a ruler across the top of

the two coupling halves. Perform the appropriate adjustments to make the ruler level and in full contact with both
coupling halves.
Once aligned, check the amount of radial alignment offset. The amount of offset must not exceed the figure given
in the maximum misalignment chart (table 14.1).

Step 1:

Step 9:

Inspect all the coupling

components and remove any protective
coatings or lubricants
from the bores, mating
surfaces, fasteners, etc.
Caution: Before cleaning the coupling parts with solvents,
remove the flexible elements.

Check the angular alignment with a feeler gauge or dial

gauge. Measure the S1 dimension at various intervals
around the periphery of the coupling. Determine the maximum and minimum dimensions without rotating the coupling. The difference between the maximum and the
minimum must not exceed the figure given under in the
maximum misalignment chart (table 14.1). Make the appropriate adjustments as these measurements are made.

Step 2:

Step 10:

Remove any existing burrs, etc. from the shafts and/or mating surfaces.

Add the amount of radial misalignment (Step 8) and angular

misalignment (Step 9) of your coupling. The total must not
exceed the allowable maximum misalignment (table 14.1).

Step 3:
Use only recommended industry standards, keystock and
tools to mount the coupling hubs onto the shafts. Caution:
The shaft ends must not protrude beyond (through) the inside of the coupling hub.
When installing an N-EUPEX style A hub, remember to
install the pin ring (part 3) over the shaft first and insure the
bolt-in hub (part 2) is oriented properly. Remove the flexible
elements before the part is heated.
If the coupling parts are heated, do not exceed 300F.

Step 4:
Secure the hub axially using a setscrew or an end plate with
shaft shoulder. When using a setscrew, it should be tightened with a hexagon socket head wrench (without using extensions). When an end plate is used, consult with Flender
regarding the recess in the coupling parts.

Step 5:

Step 11:

After the hubs have been mounted and have cooled, replace
the flexible elements. NOTE: Make sure the flexible elements
are all the same size and have the same markings.

Before start-up, check the coupling for proper fit, (i.e. the
flexible elements are fully installed and flush with the hub
face, the set screws tightened to the proper torque, the alignment and S1 dimension, etc.) making corrections if necessary. Finally, assemble the coupling guard to prevent
accidental contact with the coupling.

Step 6:
Position the shafts with coupling hubs into the connected
position. Check the S1 dimension. When using type A, ADS,
D and P couplings, slide the pin ring (part 3) into position
and connect the two parts (using the screws provided) to the
prescribed torque.

Step 7:
Align the shafts to keep radial and angular misalignment as small
as possible. This will increase the service life of the coupling.

14

CAUTION: If irregularities are detected during operation, the

drive assembly should be shut off immediately. The cause
of the problem should be determined by using the Troubleshooting Table (section 9) of the Operating Instructions. If
the cause can not be determined and there is no repair
facility nearby, call Flenders service group for the help of a
service technician.

N-EUPEX Flexible Couplings

Maintenance
Preventative Maintenance:

Storage Conditions:

Once the N-EUPEX coupling has been installed and put into
operation, a regular inspection interval and schedule should
be established to check the flexible elements for wear. This
schedule should be incorporated into your routine inspection schedule to insure the consistency of the inspection
process. However, the time period between inspections
should not exceed 1 year.

As with any elastomer or rubber material, N-EUPEX flexible

elements are subject to the effects of aging. They should be
stored in a dry, dust-free area. They should not be stored together with chemicals, solvents, fuels, acids, etc. Furthermore, they should be protected against light, especially
direct sunlight and strong artificial light with a high ultraviolet content (i.e. fluorescent, mercury-vapor, etc.). Additional factors that may impact the life or performance of the
flexible elements are exposure to oxygen, ozone, extreme
temperatures, moisture, etc. To maximize the service life, we
recommended that the inventory should continuously be rotated, with the oldest always being the first to be used.
With proper storage and application, N-EUPEX couplings
will provide many years of service and protection for your
machinery.

Flexible Element Wear:

The load of the application may create an indentation into
the flexible element we refer to as torsional set. Additionally, the amount of torsional set will vary, depending on the
size of the coupling. (On a size 58 coupling, the amount of
torsional set could be up to 14 of an inch deep. The larger the
coupling, the larger the torsional set will be.)
The torsional set does not affect the performance of the
coupling. It is simply the material reacting to the stress of
the load. However, a very large torsional set may suggest a
sizing problem and warrant additional analysis of the application.
Normal wear of the flexible elements will begin to eat away the material of the flexible element. This will
result in a visible reduction of the flexible element. When half of the flexible
elements compressed side (ref. the
red line shown in figure 15.1) has
Figure 15.1
been worn away, the elements should
be replaced.

Flexible Element Replacement:

Limitations:
Although the Flender N-EUPEX coupling is designed for
most general purpose coupling applications, there are certain limitations that should be considered:
Temperatures: Over +176F, and/or below 22F. A combination of high temperature and high humidity will reduce the
life and performance of the coupling.
Chemical Environment: Life of the flexible elements are
greatly impacted by different chemicals in various ways. A
chart of chemical compatibility can be supplied upon request.

For further details, contact the appropriate Flender

office.

If a small amount of circumferential backlash is acceptable

for the application, the flexible elements do not need to be
replaced until they are worn as described above.
In critical applications, the flexible elements should be
replaced at regular intervals. The frequency of replacement
intervals will depend on the severity of the application and
environmental conditions. The service life of the flexible
elements can vary depending on many conditions (i.e.
ultraviolet light, chemicals, extreme temperature, abrasives, etc.). If the coupling is properly sized and the flexible
elements stored and operated under normal conditions, it
will provide many years of optimal performance.
Caution! The flexible elements should only be changed
in sets. Individual flexible elements with the same color coding should be used within each set.
