Handling and storage POLIplex® polyethylene pices and fetngs are ght in weight and easy to handle compared to many other materials. They have ‘considerable resilience, fabilty and resictance te impact. Homever pipes and ftings can be scored by sharp edges and can be distorted under i028, partoulaty at higher temperatures. Therefore, in general. pipes and fitrgs should net be dropped, indented Crusted orimpected and should not be subjected to rough handing during loading and unloading operations Fipes and fitings must not be stored or transported adjacent to heat sources, such as engine exhausts, boles, naked flames or hot Water oF steam lines. While pelyethylene is very resistant to low temperatures, 95 the temperature drops below O°C the impact reeistance wil slowly reduce, and tretore more care should be taken to avoid damage by pact. Care should be taken im handing ines and fitings in wet or tasty conditions as they may become slippery ‘4 wilh ll pipe materials, contact with ols, patrol, solvents or chemicals that might have an adverse affect on future performance should be avoided ‘Typically, scores or soratches to @ depth of mere than 1% ofthe wal thickness should be avoided for pressure epplications During caling care shouldbe taken to maintain the coll ameter ator above the spected minum to prevare kerk, In uncoling oF recoling care should be teken that sharp objets Go not score the pipe Generally cnly webbing slings should be used!to lit plyethylenegipes by crane. Vacuum iting may be used, but chins, wire ropes ane hocks should be avoided Pipes of colour other than black should be protected from elevated temperatures and direct sunlight during storage and traneper, perticuatly ifthey ee tobe stored for more then 2 years 5.2 Lifting, handling, storage and transport of straight lengths Liting of individual pipes or packs up to 6m in length can be performed by a forkit, To prevent drooping of long packs or individual pipes and subsequent scuting of pipe ends, two liting poirts or spreader vars should be used for pipes or pipe packs exceeding € metres in length ‘Appropriate personnel exclusion zones should apply when liting pipes in order to avoid injury the pipe sips. Straight pipe lengths stacked for storage or transport shoud be ‘continuously end evenly supported to minimise distortion, Timber treed packs should be stacked with the frames c together and alternating evenly Packs with widely aitterng tame spacing should ret be stacked. Donot align the bearers vertically as the stacks are likely to be unstable, In such load beering stacks the maximum foe height shoud be such thatthe pipe is not permanently deformed, having regard to sidaways slabilly.Forlargor diameter pipes t may be necessary o brace the ends ofthe pipe wit internal supports to prevent ond dstotion, Sharp sections beanng agalrst ne pipes should be avoided as these can cause mdontatlors In, or seoring af, the pipe wall FFaltferent SOR’s of pipe are kept nthe same stacks then the lowest SDR (thickest wall) should ahvays be atthe bottor. Pipes may bbe nested side each ctne for transport or storage provided distortion does not occur. When boing transported, pipes should not be restrained in a mannor likely to resub in damage to them. zPLex. euro) Pipelines 5.3 Lifting, handling, storage and transport of coils Larger diameter coiled polyethylene pipes for example those of diameters equal or greater than 683mm canbe veryheavy and pose paricularhandling and storage risks. The consequences of cols fling orslipping should always be consideredas serousinjurycan ecur Ths s particulary the case for cols stored in a vertical or near vertcal position. For unloading heavier cols, delwery sites should be equipped wth cranes or forkits or crane-rucks should be used ‘When fing cals, slings must be placed around the entire cai, I'cols are lited bya fork ruck, contact points must be protected and thelitin must be performed on te entire cal. Fork tines should nat be inserted between windings ina cal Caled pipe canbe stored and transported by beinglaid fat on a continuous surtace such as pallats bua stored only to such a height thatthe battom convolutions do rot become dstarted. Pipe colls can also be stored and transported in a near vertical postion, Care must be ‘exercised to ensure the support against which the coils af leant are strong enough to withstand the load. Care should alsa be token to ensure the extemal loons ofthe vertically suppertod col are nat damagederfattenedin transport ‘When releasing col and uncling polyethylene pipe. & rust be remembered thatthe coll is under tension ang must be released in @ controlled manner. The end of the coil should be restrained at all times, thea the strops released steadily, one at a bme. It the col has bands at diferent layers ofthe col, then they should be released sequentially sterbng ftom the outer layers The amourt of eneray locked up in the col wil depend on te sizeof pipe, the lass ofthe pipe, and the sizeof the cll. The amount of energy can be substeiial and cause significant inlury or damage ifreleased in an uncontroled marner The person releasing the restraining straps should stand in a sate postion atthe side ofthe cal. Typical orally of pipes sored as ells can be resolved wth the use of r-roundlg equipment.
