NAKED ICON

The Monster has revolutionised the motorcycling world.

It has become much more than just a motorcycle: its the
perfect self-expression vehicle, a bike that makes you feel
truly unique. Introduced over twenty years ago in accordance with a less is more philosophy, its unmistakeable
lines have made it an undisputed style icon. Essential and
charismatic, it soon set a new standard: its design has inspired stylists, artists, actors and, above all, bikers all over
the globe, becoming the quintessential naked icon. The
third generation of Monster bikes successfully combines
timeless design, cutting-edge technology and made-tomeasure comfort to provide never-before-experienced
riding pleasure, versatility and safety.
3

TIMELESS DESIGN

Practicality and style merge to create an object of desire with

timeless design. A beefy, sporty outline, a sculpted metal tank,
a round headlight set between the front forks: all details that
give the bike unmatched character. Once again, a winning
combination of minimalist style and advanced technology
make this naked bike more iconic than ever. The union of form
and function is evident in the cool swingarm featured on the
1200 models and the iconic Ducati trellis frame, an evolved
solution that draws on unparalleled racing experience.
5

ONE ULTIMATE GOAL:

PERFORMANCE

The Ducati Testastretta 11 engine is a meticulously designed

gem of modern engineering. The resulting power unit ensures
unbeatable riding enjoyment and matches the dynamic characteristics of the Monster perfectly. Various versions of this
advanced, high performance engine ensures the performance
goals of each model are met in full. The Monster 821 comes
equipped with the 112 hp 821 cc Testastretta 11, while the
Monster 1200 and 1200 S feature the 1198,4 cc Dual Spark Testastretta 11 DS, putting out 135 hp and 145 hp respectively.
The Monster 1200 R, instead, is equipped with the R version
of the Testastretta 11 DS with a maximum power of 160 hp.
All models feature a 6-speed gearbox and a wet multiplate
slipper clutch with self-servo system to ensure comfort and
total riding control.
7

RACE-DERIVED
CHASSIS SET-UP

The outstanding dynamic performance of the Monster also

stems from its characteristic Trellis frame, a key style element
that matches the engine to perfection. The latter, with specially designed cylinder heads, also performs a load bearing
function, making it an integral part of the frame. This distinctive
engineering solution, derived directly from the Reparto Corse,
creates a light yet extremely tough structure that receives smooth support from the suspension system. The monoshock and
upside-down forks (43 mm on the Monster 821 and Monster
1200, 48 mm hlins on the 1200 S and 1200 R) maintain optimal on-asphalt tyre contact to assure control, agility and safety.
9

ADVANCED
ELECTRONICS
Technologically advanced, the Monster offers a complete electronic riding control package. Ducati Riding Modes
allow users to select one of three different ride modes
- Sport, Touring or Urban to adapt the bike to specific
riding conditions. Each mode acts on the Ride-by-Wire
system to set the type of power delivery, maximum engine power and the intervention levels for the Bosch 9MP
ABS and Ducati Traction Control (DTC). These last two
devices constitute the Ducati Safety Pack, as standard
on all versions. Monster 821 riders can also count on an
essential yet cutting-edge LCD instrument panel for total
at-a-glance control. The 1200 models, instead, feature a
sophisticated TFT colour dashboard that combines userfriendliness with an info array that changes according to
the selected Riding Mode. On the Monster 1200 R the
display also indicates the currently selected gear.

11

MADE-TO-MEASURE ERGONOMICS
Tailor-made comfort that ensures total control and freedom of
movement: an idea at the very core of Monster versatility. The
seat can be adjusted to two different positions - available on
the Monster 1200 R - to boost riding comfort. By modifying the
ergonomic triangle of seat, footpegs and handlebars to suit the
users build and/or riding style, a confident position - and, there-

fore, maximum control - is assured. Confidence is enhanced further by the wide, carefully positioned handlebars, allowing full
enjoyment of the thrills that only a Monster can provide. Further
attentiveness to comfort is also seen in the meticulous design
of the passenger zone, characterised by a comfortable seat and
smoothly ergonomic footpegs and grab handles.

13

FOCUS ON THE FUN

Ensuring maximum rider enjoyment is imperative for Ducati, and the way
to do it is to make everything easier. Constant research in the field of
twin-cylinder engines ensures the Monster is packed with engineering
excellence and top-quality components. The penchant for perfection of
the engines in the Monster range mean significant simplification of main-

tenance. For example, a Desmo Service, which includes checking and

any adjustment of valve regulation, only needs to be carried out every
30,000 km. And that means carefree enjoyment, an essential part of fully
enjoying the thrills that only a Monster can provide.

15

17

MONSTER 821:
MONSTER ESSENCE

The Monster 821 is designed to be the very essence of

the Monster Essential iconic lines. The unmistakeable
character of the 112 hp Testrastretta 11 engine. These
are the key traits of the Monster 821, the very essence of the Ducati naked. The Trellis frame, load-bearing
engine, Riding Modes and Ducati Safety Pack ensure
control, safety, comfort and unprecedented riding enjoyment. The uniqueness of the Monster 821 is emphasised even further on the Monster 821 Dark (with its
essential yet stylish matte Dark Stealth colouring) and
on the Monster821 Stripe. The latter is equipped with
fully adjustable forks and an even sportier look with
racing-inspired nose fairing and colour scheme. The
Monster821 is available in Ducati Red and Star White
Silk which, together with the red frame and wheels, generates an assertive colour combination.
19

PRECISION
AND AGILITY

Reactive. Fluid. Determined. Thanks to the smooth synergy of compact wheelbase, meticulously designed suspension and light 10-spoke wheels, the Monster 821 handles
like a dream. The rear 180/60 - ZR17 tyre heightens agility
and gives complete power control on every corner. With
320 mm discs and monobloc calipers with Bosch ABS,
the Brembo braking system ensures safe stopping whatever the road conditions.
21

EXHILARATING
POWER
The innate power of the 821 cc Testastretta 11 engine
is immediately evident in its deep growl. This potent
twin-cylinder 4-valve engine delivers an unmistakeable
112 hp and 65.9 lb-ft of torque. Uniquely feisty, decisively powerful, the Monster 821 guarantees thrills with

every twist of the throttle. Engine power is made even

punchier by a dry weight of just 179.5 kg, a figure achieved thanks to a light yet tough framework that employs
the engine as a load-bearing element.
23

MONSTER 1200 AND

MONSTER 1200 S:
PERFORMANCE AND
VERSATILITY

The performance and fluidity of the new Testastretta 11

DS engine, the versatility provided by the three Riding
Modes, the comfort of the adjustable seat and passenger grab handles make the Monster 1200 an intensely
thrilling bike - whether alone or with a passenger - that
responds to the riders instinct at each and every moment. Breathtaking technology is encapsulated in an
equally breathtaking yet timeless design. Their combination make the Monster 1200 an original fusion of form
and function, a one-of-a-kind interpretation of the entire
Ducati naked philosophy.
25

UNMISTAKEABLE

Iconic design is evidenced with eye-catching

shapes and lines that offer unlimited fun. Likewise,
the Monster 1200 has been given a first-class
finish down to the very last detail. Light alloy
wheels - with 10 spokes on the Monster 1200
and Y-spokes on the Monster 1200 S - ensure
a refined look. Compact rear LED lights and a
clean, minimalist handlebar area underscore the
essential nature of the Monster 1200. The end
result? A high performance bike that gets the
heart racing without even starting the engine. The
Monster 1200 is in unmistakeable Ducati Red,
with red frame and black wheels; the Monster
1200 S, instead, is also available in Star White with
a bronze frame and gloss black wheels.
27

ASSERTIVE
PERSONALITY

The 1198,4 cc Testastretta 11 DS puts

out 135 hp and a torque of 86.8 lb-ft, with
full, vigorous delivery throughout the rev
range to give enhanced riding pleasure
and full-power enjoyment whatever the
riding conditions. Performance soars
even higher on the S version, where a
Performance package boosts the power of the Testastretta 11 DS to 145 hp
and torque to 91.8 lb-ft; both are made
easy to handle by a racing-derived Brembo braking system featuring M50 monobloc calipers and 330 mm discs. The
Monster 1200 S features a top-drawer
hlins suspension set consisting of TiNtreated forks and monoshock: both are
fully adjustable. The set-up of the S version is completed with a the front carbon
fibre mudguard, aggressively designed
yet light machine-finished wheels and
LED* indicators.

BE SEDUCED BY
THE MONSTER 1200 R

In short: the most powerful Ducati naked ever. Instantly

recognisable thanks to its exclusive aesthetics, the new
Monster 1200 R offers awesome performance levels. Intended for riders whove made sport a lifestyle and want
to experience ever-greater thrills, the Monster 1200 R
compellingly expresses its full potential on the track yet
is equally at home on the road thanks to full, fluid power
delivery at low and mid-range revs. With its twin-cylinder
160 hp engine, track-ready frame and Ducati Superbikederived components, the new Monster 1200 R embodies
the supersports naked concept to perfection.
31

BORN TO RACE
The beating heart of the Monster 1200 R is the R version of the new Testastretta 11 DS engine. Improvements have optimised intake, combustion
and exhaust so that this power unit now provides 160 hp and a torque of
97 lb-ft. It is also Euro 4 compliant. There are also new elliptical throttle bodies (56 mm diameter equivalent), cylinder heads with wider air ducts, an
increased compression ratio of 13:1 and an exhaust system with large (58
mm cross-section) pipes that feed into a sporty dual silencer. All this gives
the Monster 1200 R unparalleled punch. This means maximum fun on the
track, where the bikes awesome acceleration can be unleashed,. Yet it also
means retaining the fluidity typical of this latest generation of Testastretta
11 DS engines, with 75% of torque already available at 3500 rpm.
33

TRACK-READY

The new Monster 1200 R combines the frame plus

load-bearing engine arrangement, typical of the latest
Monster bikes, with a structurally lighter, more compact subframe to which the passenger footpegs are
attached. The riders pegs are race-inspired with forged aluminium heel guards and supports to ensure
optimal control and ergonomics even when leaning
into tight track corners. With a raised set-up to allow
lean angles of 50, the R frame is ideal for extracting maximum performance from the Pirelli Diablo
Supercorsa SP tyres (the rear tyre features superbike 200/55 - ZR17 specs). The tyres are fitted on
lightweight forged Marchesini wheels that reduce unsprung weight. This boosts agility and keeps the dry
weight down to 180 kg. Standard equipment includes
adjustable hlins suspension and steering damper
plus a Brembo braking system with front 330 mm discs and M50 monobloc calipers.

35

R DESIGN

The outstanding performance of the new Monster 1200

R is immediately highlighted by a design that combines
a decidedly sporty look with compact, light rear-end
styling. The R spirit of the new Ducati naked is underscored by a unique combination of iconic tank styling and
an all-new tail: slim, upward sloping, characterised by a
tapered passenger seat cowl that, seen side-on, makes
the rear end even sharper. A newly designed high-mount
aluminium plate holder reveals the 200/55-ZR17 rear tyre.
Conscientious attention to detail gives the Monster 1200 R
a strong clear-cut personality: the metal plaque (with the
name of the model) gives the seat a touch of class, the
brushed-effect radiator covers have an R sanded onto
them, the front mudguard is made of carbon fibre. The
seat is lined with two different materials, joined together
by stylish red stitching that runs along the edge of the
riders zone.

37

ULTRA-PERFORMANCE,
ULTRA-CONTROL

The natural, never-tiring, riding position, the full yet linear power delivery from the R engine, balanced suspension with
outstanding feel and the superbike-equivalent braking power
ensure the awesome power of the Monster 1200 R is kept under complete control at all times, both on the track and on the
road: all the rider has to do is have the time of his life. One of
the most advanced electronics packages ever seen lets riders
hone the personality of the bike to suit their individual riding
styles and specific ride conditions. Thanks to the three Riding
Modes - which act on the Ride-by-Wire system - riders can set
the desired power delivery and engine power settings. Just
one press of a button on the handlebar controls and the Monster 1200 R goes from the 160 hp sports-style power delivery
of Sport mode to the full yet progressive power settings of
Touring mode or the 100 hp Urban mode. Each Riding Mode
is also programmed to act on the parameters of the Ducati
Safety Pack, which consists of Bosch 9MP ABS, adjustable to
three different levels, and eight-level Ducati Traction Control.
The application of Riding Modes also allows the user to vary
both the graphics and the type of information on the colour
TFT display. On the Monster 1200 R the TFT dashboard also
indicates the currently selected gear.
