Homework Due Friday 9/16
Problems 1-3
1. Dendritic Electrodeposition
A porous metal deposit of finger-like dendrites is grown by electrodeposition from a
solution of metal cations at concentration c0 at constant current, proportional to the diffusive
flux N at the tips. As shown in the experimental image of copper electrodeposition from CuSO4
solution, the concentration profile c(x,t) ahead of the growth is approximately one-dimensional
and steady in the frame moving with the interface (dendrite envelope) at constant velocity v .

(a) Determine v in terms of the molar concentration cd of metal in the porous deposit.
(b) Derive and solve an ordinary differential equation for the concentration profile,
c(x,t) = c0 f ( ), = x vt . What is the thickness of the diffusion layer?
(c) Determine cd and thus the porosity of the deposit, assuming that it contains no
remaining cations in solution, in terms of the molar mass m and density of the metal.
