CULTURAL PAROS
One whole History
Paros has a long and rich
history which dates back to
the prehistoric times. The
island was at various times an
important cultural, commercial
and financial center, due to a
large extent to its significant
geographical location, strategic
importance and marble, the
famous Lychnitis. It surely
enchants every visitor with its
priceless natural beauty, unique
historical monuments and
cultural wealth.
Archaeological findings at
Koukounaries indicate that
Paros has been inhabited since
the beginning of the Later
Neolithic period. Findings from
settlements that date back to
the Early Bronze period (32002000 BC) have been discovered
at Parikia, Koukounaries and
Kambos. An ancient cemetery of
the same period was also found
at Pyrgos.

PAROS IN THE ORLOV PERIOD 1770-1774

against the Ottoman yoke, the Russians installed a
nautical base in Naoussa Bay. Although important for
Paros, this period remains little studied; hundreds of
Russian ships moored here from 1770 to 1774, and fort
systems, administration buildings and living space to
house more than 10.000 people were created. In the
peninsula and the Ai-Yannis bay visible traces of this
occupation are still evident.
The permanent exhibition in the Ai-Yannis
monastery cells, covering the themes War and Peace
in the Aegean, the 18th century, the Orlov Period and
Greek shipping, highlights the historical site itself
and its particular history in Paros and the peninsula.
It features maps, documents and engravings of the
Russian navy settlement and with the use of new
media displays, narrates this historical period.
Beyond the exhibition, visitors are navigated to
the various ruins of the Russian settlement found
