Question 1

A motor vehicle of mass 1300 kg has a track of 1.76 m and the centre of gravity is 0.54 m
2
above ground level. The four road wheels have a total moment of inertia of 8 kg m and a
rolling radius of 0.48 m. The vehicle is traveling at a speed of 70 metres per second in a
circular path of radius 168 m.
Determine:
1.1
the total vertical component of the reaction on the two outer wheels, if the track is not
banked
[5 marks]
1.2
the angle of banking necessary for there to be no tendency for the vehicle to sideslip
[5 marks]
1.3
the total component (perpendicular to the track surface) of the reaction on the two
outer wheels, if the track is banked to the angle specified in (1.2) above [5 marks]
