1924, Surrealism made its mark in art history was officially announcesd by its

known founder Andr Breton (1896-1966) with his publication of his Manifesto du
Surrealisme It was quite clear that surrealism was a more positive re-birth of Dada
after it was sink in its own negativity in the early 20s. Dada was a protest against
the war and was claimed to be the anti-art, all tradition to be rejected in order to
seek freedom. Dadaist also said they are not creating art but mocking art, yet that
did not stop some of Dadaist to create meaningful artwork that influenced graphic
design nonetheless. Though after the war ended Dada starting to crumble, their
activities became more extreme and absurd which created disagreements among
its members. And according to (.) written French writer Andr Breton (18961966), who was associating with the Dadaist, emerged as a new leader who
believed that Dada had lost its relevance, making new directions necessary. Having
pushed its negative activities to the limit, lacking a unified leadership, and with its
members facing the new ideas that eventually led to surrealism. Then, its
considered demised by the end of 1922. The hiatus for a couple of years between
Dada and Surrealism was a phase with several of experimental activities by Breton
and his literature circle. During the time Breton became fascinated with Sigmund
Freuds theories of the unconscious and studied it for their poetic interests, with this
the group was developing techniques of automatic writing which inspired
Surrealism to emerge to the surface at last.

was first coined in 1917 by Bretons role model Apollinaire, though according to
(Hopkins 2004, p.17) Breton gave a greater precision for the word in his manifesto
and was said to be based on the believe in the superior reality of certain previously
neglected associations, in the omnipotence of dreams in the disinterested play of
thought. There was hardly any visual art at this point, the manifesto was essentially
a poets charter and priority was accorded to psychic automatismby means of
the written word, or in any other manner.
