North Country (2005)

For every woman who found herself flooded

with lewd and indecent comments, vulgar graffiti,
and often times unsolicited advances of male
colleagues in the workplace. It has never been easy.
Every so often, you convince yourself to take it as a
laughing matter, a practical joke, and just brush it
off. You tell yourself to shut up and take it like a
man. You chose to be in this hostile environment.
But when will you say to yourself you have had
enough? When will you decide that this
psychological and physical abuse has got to stop
once and for all?
Inspired by true story, North Country is a
fictionalized retelling of the first and landmark
sexual harassment case of Lois Jenson against
Eveleth Mines in 1988. It was a ground-breaking
lawsuit in the United States that paved way for the
formulation of sexual harassment and sexual
discrimination policies against women in the
workplace. Directed by Niki Caro, although somehow the movie did not necessarily
went exactly identical to the real details of what happened, it made itself sure to be
true to the spirit of factual events. And with astounding performance by Charlize
Theron, who plays Josey Aimes which is based on Jenson character, the movie
greatly examines the causes and effects of sexual harassment in the workplace. It is
ultimately engaging, charming and well-written.
