Introduction
This is a task-based language teaching series with an assessment section. Taskbased language teaching (TBLT) focuses on the use of authentic language and on
asking students to do meaningful tasks using the target language.
This workbook and audio series introduces basic Home and Community themes
through three books:
Where Do I Live?
Whats In My Home?
Whats In My Neighbourhood?
The concept is simple:
1. Learn the target vocabulary.
2. Practice the vocabulary, using the reading, writing, listening and speaking TBLT
exercises.
3. Assessment.
Each book is divided into seven sections:
1. Vocabulary Introduction through flashcards and illustrations.
2. Vocabulary Practice: Learning the vocabulary.
3. Listening Practice
4. Speaking Practice
5. Reading Practice
6. Writing Practice
7. Assessment/Testing and Portfolio Based Learning Assessment (PBLA).
The assessment section is designed so you and your students can get a sense of
how they have done, where they succeeded and the areas where more work is
required.

WHATS IN MY NEIGHBOURHOOD?

recreation centre

community centre

Note to the teacher: What is the difference between a recreation centre and a
community centre? It may be the activities offered at each.
Research your local centres and make a list of activities offered at each centre.
Write the list on the board. Make sure the students know what the activities
are. Under Recreation Centre, with the help of the students, list the activates
offered there. Do the same for Community Centre.

Vocabulary Practice

Exercise 2A Vocabulary Practice: Cube Toss, Version One

Directions for Teacher: You will need tape and scissors for the following
exercise. Make 4 cubes. Two cubes will have the vocabulary words on the them,
the others will have the pictures on them. Make 2 additional cubes if you wish to
mix words and pictures on one cube. Have students cut out and tape the
templates of the cubes.
Directions: When you have made the cubes, roll them one at a time and name the
picture or word that lands face-up. Use one cube at a time until you have named
each picture several times. Use your Vocabulary Word List for help.

Exercise 2B Vocabulary Practice: Cube Toss, Version Two

Directions for Teacher: Put students into pairs. Have students practice naming
the pictures together co-operatively for a specified time period.

Exercise 2C Vocabulary Practice: Cube Toss, Version Three

Directions for Teacher: Place students into competitive pair groupings (pairs of
similar speaking ability). Students will need a blank sheet of paper to record
their scores. Have students take turns rolling the cube. When one student has
rolled, they must try to say the word of the picture on the cube. If they are
correct, they get a point. If they are not correct they do not get a point and
must let the other student roll the cube. The other student now has the opportunity to get a point if they name the picture. At the end of the allotted time the
student with the most points wins the game.
Directions: Roll the cube one student at a time. Collect one point for every
picture you name. Take turns rolling the cube.
