Ifyoueverfeelfancyorfearsomeorfree
takeawalkdowntheroadtotheFirebirdTree.
Firstyoullcometotheoceanwayupinthesky
wherethebirdslearntoswimandthefishlearntofly,
andabitfurtherstillyouwillseetheredsands
wherethetreesaresothickthatthereisntmuchland,
andatlast,ifyoukeeptothepath,youwillreach
thecoldmountainthathasatitspeakawarmbeach.
Andjustpasttheshorewherethewatersallfreeze
youwilllaugh,sing,andplayintheFirebirdTrees.

Deepinthewoodsoftheflormestblack
therearewhisperingsofasornishpitch,
theSooflings,allwaitingtoattack
aretheservantsoftheWoozleWitch.
Shefrillsthemupfromthetallgreenmoss
thatgrowsplessilyonthesharpeststones,
andtheywaitforthetravellers,trucheredandlost,
andtheybatheintheirbloodandtheygnawontheirbones.

Thereareotherworkingsoftrammishpain
thatthesorlindyWoozleWitchhaswrought.
Tetchedfriend,inthewoods,whenthesunfletsandwanes,
turnyourswordledfeetroundonthepathyouhavetrod.

Pleasetell,OgreatPaul,ofthetoweringwall,
thatroseoverthelandandthesea.
Tellmeallthatyouknowofthesnakesinthesky
andthetreesthatburnedandscreamed.
Isittruethatthedogswereallturnedintofrogs,
andthecatsintochimpanzees?
Wasalittleboycrownedasthekingofthetown
whenhisparentswereturnedintofleas?
Didthecloudsreallysing,andthechurchbellsallring,
andseagullsdiveintothesea?
Iknowthatishasbeenalonglifeforyou,
toremembertheoldtimesandways,
butIwasntalive,andforpuretruthIstrive,
foryouhearsuchstrangestoriesthesedays.
