A PRACTICAL SHORT COURSE ON MATLAB-BASED IMAGE PROCESSING

COURSE CODE: MAT-403

Introduction
This course is specifically designed for students, professional and amateurs who want to learn image
processing and its practical usage. The course assumes no a prior knowledge of either image
processing or MATLAB. At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the basics
of image processing and shall be in a position to confidently use MATLAB's image processing
toolbox to solve their respective problems. Presentation slides/lab sheets shall be provided.
Course Contents (The contents below covers both theory and Labs/Hands-on practice
PART I MATLAB BASICS
Basic introduction, overview of MATLAB/SIMULINK product family and toolboxes.
MATLAB desktop, variables, arrays, structures, strings, relational and logical operations.
Control flow, matrix computations, plotting, writing M-files and M-functions.
PART II DIGITAL IMAGE BASICS, PLUS
Digital image representation, reading, displaying and saving images.
Color, gray-scale and binary images. RGB, HSI, gray and binary transformations.
Image indexing and block partitioning.
A simple image encryption system.
PART III SPATIAL DOMAIN PROCESSING (POINT PROCESSING)
Arithmetic and logical operations. Image histogram and histogram equalization.
Contrast stretching and intensity transformation.
Application areas: example of a car license plate system, medical imaging.
PART IV SPATIAL DOMAIN PROCESSING (AREA PROCESSING)
Filter masks used in spatial domain image processing.
Image blurring and sharpening. Edge detection and median filtering.
Image scaling, rotation and translation.
PART V FREQUENCY DOMAIN PROCESSING
The discrete cosine transform and its application in image compression.
The wavelet transform and its practical applications.
Compression issues in medical imaging.
PART VI IMAGE SECURITY
Watermarking and image hashing techniques.
LSB-based information hiding and authentication. State-of-the-art.
Multimedia classroom, P-IV machines, hardware lab, aircon and back-up
generator.
Timings and Duration 3pm-5pm, 20 HOURS (4 HOURS/WEEK). Weekends: 6 Hrs/day
