FOLK (TRADITIONAL) AGRICULTURE IN VISOK
(THE PIROT REGION)
Summary
The paper was written as part of monographic research project of the Ethnographic Museum
in Belgrade Ethnographic Characteristics of the Pirot Region, but the research results presented
herein include the area of Visok and characteristic elements of folk (traditional) agriculture. The
paper also presents boundaries and geographical position of the area of Visok, climate and soil characteristics, the prevalence of some agricultural crops in traditional and contemporary production,
systems of agricultural products processing and storing, characteristics of commercial buildings
and forms of subsidiary occupations. Special attention, both during the research and the presentation of results, has been paid to the main characteristics of a plow in the Pirot region. The results
presented in this paper put plow in the Pirot region in a broader historical and anthropogeographical
context of its presence in the Balkans and Southeastern Europe.
