Please find below some suggestions for number activities to complete with Eva
at home. Let me know how you go with these, we can change them in a few
weeks. The idea is to increase Evas confidence, fluency and flexibility with
numbers.
Using playing cards

Choose 3 cards place them down one will represent the hundreds, one
the tens and the last the ones
o Which position is the ? in
o ask to order them to make the biggest number
o ask to order them to make the smallest number
o which digit would you need to change to add 10, to add 100 etc
what is the new number
o when confident increase to 4 cards to include the thousands
shuffle cards choose 2 and add them together / when confident increase
to adding 3 then 4 cards
Use as multiplication flip cards remove the king - ace is 1, jack is 11 and
queen is 12. Test Eva on the times table that she is currently working on
i.e. if she is on 5s then turn the card over and if it is a 4 then Eva needs to
calculate 4 x 5 (4 groups of 5) and so on the idea is to be able to say
them at speed approx 3 seconds for each card. In class they are tested
on 36 cards, to be completed in 1 and a half minutes.

Place Value spinners / Place Value dice

Use the above to say numbers and Eva to represent / or in the reverse roll
or spin and Eva has to state the number

Place value mat

Say a number to write then ask to change number to add for example
add one hundred / 4 tens or 40 / 6 ones
Say 3 digits ask to write the biggest number / the smallest number
Write a 2 digit number underneath write another 2 digit number (in the
correct columns) add them up ensuring the digits for the answer are in
the correct columns

To check understanding of patterns in number

o What number is 10 after? (number directly below)
o What number is 10 before? (number directly above)
o Is ? number odd or even can you see the pattern?
o Look at patterns of 2s, 5s and 10s times tables
