I have a familiar nickname in Indonesia and it can be put as a first name, a middle
name, a last name or nickname. In English my nickname means goddess. In Hebrew it means
friend. In Welsh it means beloved. Other sources explained that my nickname means
beautiful woman, elegant, all-powerful, and very suitable given to girls who are not much
acting. I dont think it is the reason why my parents give that nickname. I think my nickname
is simple. Yes, may be it is the truly reason, because it is simple.
If you are browsing my nickname in search engines, you will see there are many
people named Dewi. It becomes a familiar name in Indonesia, because we know that since we
were children and read some fairy-tales about goddesses, such as Dewi Sri, the Javanese
goddess of rice and fertility. We got a impression of a figure of a beautiful and nice woman.
In Indonesia, Dewi is given for girls, and may be it is the reason why I had five more
friends who had the same nickname as mine and I was confused how to call them. What
makes me surprised is in Wales it is a popular name for boys. Dewi is an alternate form of
the Welsh names for the name David. David is the name of the Patron Saint of Wales, Dewi
Sant (or Saint David in English) who has his national day on 1 March.
Although I tried to change my nickname when I was child, but I didnt think to hate
my nickname, because I know it has a good meaning and it can be wrote in other characters
easily. For example, when I went to Korean event, I studied how to write names in Korean
characters. One of Korean students gave an example, and then I could write my name in
Korean characters.
