Construction sector

The contribution of GDP in construction sector in the year 2010 is 11.4%. This is
because of the number of the construction project high in demands as many big project have
been completed and contractor were going through a difficult time after Asian Financial Crisis. At
the year 2011, the contribution of GDP in construction sector decrease to 4.7%. In the year
2011, number of private projects exceeds the number of the government projects. Private
sectors construction activities have increase especially in the area of LNG degasification (oil &
gas) and the development of oil terminal.
The contribution of GDP in construction sector rose to 18.1% in 2012. This is driven by
the residential and civil engineering sub-sector. Domestic construction companies also
expanded by overseas project especially in Middle East, India and Thailand. In 2013, the
contribution of GDP decrease to 10.6% and continue to decrease to 9.6% in 2014. Deputy
Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim stated that domestic demand will still be there but expected
to slow down because other industries will contribute to GDP growth.
