SECTION Ill - COMPREHENSION Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions based on it. Use complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling. A. Petroleum is a general term for oil and natural gas. Oil and gas are important fossil fuels formed from the decomposition and pressurisation of algae, plankton and other organisms. This process. forms hydrocarbons, which are compounds consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon that are powerful combustible fuels. Individual deposits of oil and gas can also contain other compounds, but it is the hydrocarbons that make them valuable. When most people think of petroleum they think of gasoline and diesel fuel, but most will rarely consider the other unexpected places that petroleum by-products show up in modern life. Various refined products have found their way into everything from plastics to pharmaceuticals, dyes and detergents. One of the most important uses of petroleum is in the production of ammonia to be used as the nitrogen source in agricultural fertilizers. Prior to that, ammonia for fertilizer came only from manure and other biological processes. Agriculture also depends on the use of pesticides to ensure consistent, healthy crop yields. Pesticides are almost all produced from oil. In essence, from running farm machinery to fertilizing plants, agriculture is one of the largest users of petroleum based products. Plastic is a staple of modern life. From computer monitors to nylon to Styrofoam, plastics are integral aspects of many manufactured products. Nylon, which is in everything from stockings to mechanical gears and even in car engines, is the most successful petroleum-based plastic to date. 36. Whatis petroleum? (1 mk) 37. There are over a quarter of a million plant species, however, only about six hundred or so are carnivorous. This means that they attract, trap and devour bugs. Like other plants, they get energy from the sun but unlike other plants, they get their nutrients from their prey. Carnivorous plants live in bogs and places where the soil lacks nutrients. Most plants acquire nutrients from the soil. Carnivorous plants have to feed on bugs to survive ‘Two examples of carnivorous plants are the Pitcher plant and the Venus’ flytrap. Pitcher plants trick their prey into landing on them. They offer nectar bribes to the unsuspecting insects that are attracted to the nectar. The fly lands on the pitcher plants but slips into deep chambers filled with digestive fluids andis eaten. The “jaws” of Venus’ flytrap open wide, and on them, are short, stiff hairs called trigger hairs When any insect touches these hairs, the leaves snap, trapping the insects. The trap constricts tightly around the insect and secretes digestive juices. The digestive protess takes between five to twelve days depending on the size of the insect, temperature and the age of the trap. Scientists still do not understand fully how the trap works. They theorize that it closes because of electrical current that runs through the plant. 36. (a) Whyare some plants considered “carnivorous”? One hundred million years ago we would not have recognised the Caribbean region as it is today. The land mass of South America stretched much further north, reaching almost as far as Grenada. Deep down on the sea bed, the first mountains were being formed by pressures in the earth's crust. The earth folded and cracked, pushing some sections upwards, while others plunged deeper. In this way, the mountains which lie in a chain from Mexico to Puerta Rico and from Central America through Jamaica to Hispaniola, were thrust upwards. Meanwhile, the rivers of South America were bringing down the masses of mud and silt which spread over the sea floor of the Caribbean. Alll of this action took place between 50 and 70 million years ago. Another great period of disturbance occurred 26 million years ago, when the folding of the land created the mountains of the Greater Antilles. Slowly the islands rose out of the ocean depths, covered in rich deposits from the South American rivers. This was the basis of the soil on our islands today. He has entertained audiences across the globe. Sparrow's roots are in Gran Roi, a rural fishing village in Grenada. He was born to a poor working class family. They migrated to his adopted homeland, Trinidad, when he was just one year old. He attended the New Town Boys School where he was selected to sing in the boys choir of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions based on it. Use complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling. In the wild, it often comes down to predator and prey, the hunter and the hunted. As you can imagine, most organisms want to stay alive. They have developed ways of adapting to severe habitats, and hiding from those who would like to devour them. So how do they do it? One very helpful adaptation is called camouflage. Camouflage refers to the protective colouring that conceals an animal and enables it to blend into its surroundings. This is often good enough to fool a predator that is scanning an area to look for food. This helps prey to hide from its predator. But did you know that it often works the other way around, too? Predators can use camouflage to trap their prey. If a predator wants to eat a certain animal, and that animal cannot see it lying in wait, it can pounce on its prey unexpectedly, devouring it before it even knows what is happening. For example, leopards’ spotted coats, also called rosette, help to camouflage them in tall grass while they hunt. Another popular adaptation is mimicry. Mimicry is when an animal has markings or other physical characteristics that allow it to look like some other kind of animal thatis larger or poisonous. If it can make its predators believe that it is something that preys on them, or would at least be difficult or painful to catch, its predator will often go off in search of an easier target. For example the non- poisonous Scarlet Kingsnake mimics the colours of a poisonous Coral snake. Also the Viceroy butterfly mimics the look of a poisonous Monarch butterfly so that predators will avoid eating her. 36. (a) Whatis camouflage? In 1937, the first electronic, digital computer was built by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry. It was called the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC). In 1946, the first E general purpose digital computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) was built. ENIAC received a great deal of publicity, because of its huge size. It measured approximately 2.4m by 0.9m by 30.5m and weighed roughly 30 tons. When this computer was turned on for the first time, lights dimmed in sections of Philadelphia. Computers of this generation could only Performa single task and they had no operating system. The second generation of computers were more reliable. In 1951, the first computer for commercial use was introduced to the public; the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC 1). In 1953, the International Business Machine (IBM), made their mark in the computer world. During this generation of computers, over 100 computer programming languages were developed; computers had memory and operating systems. Storage media such as tape and disk were in use and also printers were used for output. 1963 to present - The invention of integrated circuit brought us the third generation of computers. With this invention, computers became smaller, more powerful more reliable and they were able to. run many different programs at the same time. In 1980, Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-Dos), was born and in 1981, IBM introduced the personal computer (PC) for home and office use. Three years later, Apple gave us the Macintosh computer with its icon driven interface and the 90's gave us the Windows operating system. Use complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling. The Renaissance was a time of ‘rebirth’ for Europe. Scholars looked back at the beauty and learning of the ancient Greeks and Romans. They developed ideas brought by traders returning from distant lands - mathematics from the Arabs and the art of printing from the Chinese. ‘And so, within two hundred years came a burst of expression in art, literature, music, mathematical science and drama that included the plays of William Shakespeare Books were being printed. The new invention, the printing press, made books more quickly and cheaply. All the letters of the alphabet were moulded on small blocks of wood or metal. These blocks were put together to form words. The whole tray or ‘galley’ of blocks was then covered with ink and quickly pressed onto sheets of paper. The first book was printed in Europe in 1456. With more books appearing, there was a new interest in learning, This is only one reason why, suddenly, between 1400 and 1600, Wester Europe moved forward. It was a time when Europeans wanted to find out about everything around them. They wanted to see what was over the next mountain, what was across the sea, and what was in the heavens. European adventurers explored places farther from their homelands. In 1492, a Spanish fleet led by Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas. Often, we allow ourselves to get all worked up about things that, upon closer examination, aren't really that big a deal. We focus on little problems and concerns and blow them way out of proportion. A stranger, for example, might cutin front of us in traffic. Rather than letit go, and go on with our day, we convince ourselves that we are justified in our anger. We play out an imaginary confrontation in our mind. Many of us might even tell someone else about the incident later on rather than simply lett go. Why not instead, simply allow the driver to have his accident somewhere else? Try to have compassion for the person and remember how painful its to be in such an enormous hurry. This way, we can maintain our own sense of well-being and avoid taking other people's problems personally. There are many similar, “small stuff” examples that occur every day in our lives. Whether we had to wait in line, listen to unfair criticism, or do the lion’s share of the work, it pays enormous dividends if we learn not to worry about litle things. So many people spend so much of theirlife energy “sweating the small stuff" that they completely lose touch with the magic and beauty of life. The ocean can be a playground for surfers or bathers or a potential danger when there is a tsunami. The ocean is always in motion because of currents, waves and tides. A large movement of water in one direction is a current. Currents can be temporary or long lasting. They can be near the surface or in the deep ocean. A rip current is a strong flow of water running from a beach back to the open ocean. A swimmer caught in a rip current can be in much more danger than a surfer. Swimmers who find themselves in a rip current should not try to swim back to shore. Instead, they should swim parallel to the shore. Waves are located on the ocean's surface and are commonly powered by wind. The size of the wave depends on wind speed and the fetch or the area over which the wind is blowing. The smallest group of waves are ripples which can reach a maximum height of three metres. The largest waves ‘occur where there are large expanses of open water that wind can affect. Hawailis a surfer's paradise. Wind is not only the cause of large waves. A tsunami is a gigantic wave created by an earthquake or volcanic eruption which displaces a large amount of water. Tsunami waves are capable of destroying seaside communities with wave heights that sometimes exceed twenty metres.
