Chapter 24 Notes

Further Elements of the Harmonic Vocabulary

Introduction
Tonal harmony: highest achievement of western arts
The Dominant with a Substituted 6th
Triad with added 6th: not present in Western music before
impressionism
Example 24-1: IV chord with added 6th
o IVadd 6 ---looks like a ii65 ---but isnt because there is an unresolved
7th
Not uncommon in 19th Century: V in root position with a substituted 6th
o 6th above the root is substituted for the 5th
Example 24-2c
o A4 appears in place of the 5th
o Substituted 6th (Vsubs6th)
o Same scale degree as iii6
Ex 24-3
o Key of D: (Vsubs6th) {ACE}
Ex 24-5a: 7th chord placed below the added 6th ALWAYS
o Bb: V7 sub 6th = FADEb
When you resolve a V or V7 with a substituted 6th, the 6th should leap
down to tonic ----the 6th never acts as an anticipation
