THE POSITION
OF A CHARACTER in a
scene changes the way we appraise the
scene,
and also affects the overall balance of the
image. Here, our figure in the left version
is
examining his bookshelves from a
distance.
Its a well-balanced image: he stands
on the
left of the scene, the books are on
the right, and the eye leads naturally from one to the
other.
In the second version, weve
moved him closer to the books
He may be able to see
them more clearly here, but
the image falls apart. With all
the visual interest cramped
on
the right of the picture, the
whole left half
is just dead space.
