ATHENIAN VS. SPARTAN WOMEN

There are a of similarities and differences between
Athenian women and Spartan women. They were both about
at the time of 300 B.C. to 1200 B.C. One important thing that
they both did was a lot of housework, and an important
difference was that one of them had more rights than the
other. The women were a really important part of an
Athenian or Spartan family with a lot of responsibilities.
Without them, the family would be torn apart!
Unfortunately, one thing that Sparta had and Athens didnt
have was that they could own their own land. They didnt
have to have a husband to own land while Athenian women
couldnt
Athenian women were very different than Spartan.
Athenian women
had very little rights and had a lot against them. For
example, in Athens, the women couldnt own their own land
and needed a husband while in Sparta, women were allowed
to own at most of the land. Athenian women werent
considered as citizens, which meant only men were
considered as citizens. They also werent allowed to

participate in any sport of any kind or exercise anytime,

anywhere. Some women went to dinner parties with their
female friends. But, men werent allowed to join these
parties. Unfortunately, women in Athens couldnt go outside
of the house alone to shop, get food, or any reason. They
needed a man to accompany them or people would think
shes a prostitute. When women in Athens had a slave in
their household, the slaves werent theirs and wasnt their
property. They werent allowed to own the slave, the
husband owned it while the wife used it and gave the slave
hard chores that a women would not want to do. So,
Athenian women dont have many rights.
