Question:
The displacement x of a particle depends on time t as given by t = ax2 + bx, where a and b are constants.
Show that the deceleration of the particle is given by 2av3, where v is the velocity of the particle?

Answer:
t = ax2 + bx
Differentiating this with respect to t, we get
1 = 2ax

+b

(Note the

= 1)

= (2ax + b)
Or
=
Or
= (2ax + b)1

v=

(Note that

= v, the velocity of the particle at time t)

The deceleration of the particle is given

A=

= (2ax + b)2 (2a

= 2a

+ 0)

(2ax + b)2

= 2av (2ax + b)2

= 2avv2
Or

(Note that v =

= (2ax + b)1 )

A = 2av3

Negative sign indicates that it is deceleration.
