FLASH GORDON RETURNS

--------------------------------------------Wollongong,NSW | Luke "Flash" Gordon came out of
retirement to get Wollongong's running game back on track
and he did so with 64 rushing yards against the Perth
Cougars. Whilst he was beaten by team mate Francis
Elliott who finished with 74, one run in particular not
only had the fans on its feet but also inspired his
teammates. Facing a 2nd and goal at the 9 yard line,
Gordon carried three and four defenders on his back as he
surged to the line only to be pulled down inches short.
This did not matter though as Gordon burst in on the very
next play to give Wollongong a 10-7 lead midway through
the second quarter. "We signed him because of his vision"
said Coach Steve O'Dea. "He is an old warrior. He is not
the quickest, he is not the strongest but he is a smart
runner and he runs to where the holes are".
Wollongong had to match a Perth side that was on
a mission. Having won 3 of its last 4 the Cougars are a
team with plenty of threats. One player who had a break
out game was former Mason Medallist Fabien Kennedy.
Kennedy caught 9 passes for 140 yards and terrorised the
left side with his size. He scored the Cougars first
touchdown, a 16 yard effort where he fought off close
coverage from Safety Fabien Moreau.
The game was a tight affair and that was fitting
for the loser of this one was effectively out of the play
off race. Tyrone Reaiche kicked a field goal to put the
Miners clear 13-7 before Anthony Creighton crossed
changing the lead. Reiche and Keiron Geia traded field
goals before Nathan Jacks scored. Both sides struggled to
stop the other from moving the ball down the field and it
became clear it would be last man standing. Hymel Aiono
caught the Miners out with a great seam route and Charlie
Moore connected to give Perth back the lead 23-22 with
just 1m51 remaining. But Bryce Sopi matched that with a
679 yard pass straight away and Wollongong would hang on.
The game would end with Moore throwing an incomplete pass
intended for Tight End Kyle Carter into the end zone.
