I work in the Department of Security and Justice, which is part of
FIIAPP. As the name of Department suggests, we sort out the
strengthening of the justice and security sectors in developing countries around the World. We work hard with the European Instrument contributing to Stability and Peace and three of its programmes: Cocaine Route, Heroine Route and Fight against Terrorism. Specifically, I am the Project officer of SEACOP (Seaport Cooperation Project). The overall objective of this project is to support the fight against maritime illicit trafficking and associated criminal networks in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. My Project is implemented by a number of experts (mainly police officer with experience in drug trafficking) that develop activities like trainings in the targeted countries. The main activities of the project are: 1. Create inter-agency Joint Maritime Control Units (JMCUs) and Maritime Intelligence Units (MIUs) in key ports. 2. Comprehensive training in maritime search techniques, and in maritime intelligence and targeting, by EU Member State Experts. 3. Procurement of search equipment, protective clothing and information technology to support the activities. 4. Planned mentoring activity maintained following the training. 5. Improving cooperation and information sharing at regional and trans-regional level. 6. Establish national maritime information systems and promote the sharing of information regionally. We are working in a variety of cultures and languages, but mainly English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. The Project Officers like me usually monitor the successful implementation of the activities and the budget execution. We also travelled regularly to represent FIIAPP in activities such as Regional Workshops, where we talk about the project milestones.
