Quantitative determination of the acidity of softdrinks

Softdrinks are popular beverages. They are classified as carbonated drinks

since in their preparation, carbon dioxide is dissolved. This gives the drink its
distinctive taste and texture. There are different flavor of softdrinks, but the main
ingredients are water and sugar. They only vary in the relative amounts of the
added acids of which commonly used ones are phosphoric (H 3PO4) and citric acid (C6H8O7).
PROCEDURE
Prepare 250mL of 0.05 M NaOH solution and standardize it using 0.150 g
Potassium acid phthalate using phenolphthalein indicator. Make two trials for the
standardization.
Heat about 75 mL of the softdrink sample for 5 minutes, and then shake until
no more bubble formation is visible. Use two different brands of softdrinks (should
be the colorless or slightly colored type). Titrate 20 mL of each softdrink sample
using phenolphthalein as indicator and determine their acidity. Make two trials for
the titration of each softdrink sample.
GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What is the purpose of heating and shaking the softdrink samples prior to
the titration?
2. Give the balanced chemical equation for the reaction that takes place
when NaOH solution is used to titrate the softdrink sample.
3. Determine the mass of the acid present in and 8 ounce bottle of each
softdrink brand.
