TITLE

DESIGN OF TRAFFIC JUNCTION FOR AN UNSIGNALISED INTERSECTION

1.1 Introduction
The need for an open-ended laboratory activity is emphasized in
enhancing independent learning activities and inculcating creativity
and innovation of students. It is now a required element in an
accreditation exercise as stipulated in the EAC Manual 2012.
In this laboratory activity, traffic flows is to be assessed and the level of
operating performance for a calculated capacity can be identified.
Traffic flows can be reasonably well when the rate of flow is less than
at capacity, but excessive delay and congestion can occur when the
rate of flow is at or near capacity. Capacity analysis involves the
quantitative evaluation of a road section to carry traffic flow.
For a given capacity, the level of operating performance that is, the
quality of flow change with the traffic density on the highway. The level
of operating performance is indicated by the concept of level of service
(LOS), which uses qualitative measures that characterize both
operational conditions within a traffic stream and motorist and
passengers perception of them.

PREAMBLE

1.2 Objectives
The objective of this study is to design the traffic junction for an
unsignalised intersection.
1.3 Learning Outcomes
At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able to:
1. Determine the design of traffic junction using appropriate tools.
2. Analyze and present the relevant results of traffic data.
3. Work in group to produce technical report.

2.0 Problem Statement

Recently, the top management of UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang has
received a few complaints made by students and staffs on the traffic
congestion especially during the peak hours. Rapid development in
UiTM may be the main cause of this problem.
Therefore, the campus management has appointed your company to
traffic assessment in UiTM Pulau Pinang to solve this problem.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

3.1 Apparatus
The group must identify the availability of the chosen apparatus in the
lab before the right procedures can be identified.
3.2

Procedures
The group is required to search for the relevant procedure to carry out
the test based on any appropriate guideline/manual produced by
highway and traffic department in Malaysia. The document must be
made ready for verification by the instructor during the laboratory
activity.

WAYS & MEANS

3.3

Data Acquisition
All data collected and observed during the test must be tabulate in
proper format for easy verification and presentation of the technical
report.

Results, Analysis and Conclusion

The group is required to submit a technical report within a week and
state what type of solution should be taken to resolve the problem. In
the report, you should include the proper procedure, analysis of data
and the outcome of the study.
