Binge Drinking

Thesis: The main leading causes of death for teens are car accidents, homicides, and
suicides, and alcohol is the leading factor of all three.
Outline:
I.

As a teenager in college I have been exposed to just how much teens are
abusing alcohol.
A. Many incoming freshmen in college tend to abuse alcohol with all the
partying and experimenting their not quite used to with all their new
freedom.
B. Ive had to babysit and stay up with a few friends who were not able to
handle their alcohol right and threw up throughout the night.
C. 90% of alcohol consumed by teens is consumed in the form of binge
drinking.

II.

Each year more than 5,000 deaths are linked to drinking.


A. In 2003, 31% of teen drivers who died in car accidents had been involved
in drinking.
B. It happens way too frequently to young, inexperienced drinkers who
engage in extreme binge drinking for pleasure.
C. Most commonly everyone drinking is under aged and illegally drinking
therefore afraid to call for help when dealing with alcohol poisoning,
leading to the persons death.
D. Each year, almost 2,000 people under the age of 21 years die in car
crashes in which underage drinking is involved. Alcohol is involved in
nearly half of all violent deaths involving teens.(Medicenenet.com)

III.

Alcohol is the most frequently used drug abused by teens.


A. Nearly 80% of the High School seniors have admitted to trying alcohol
B. 50% of teens admit to consuming alcohol within the last month
C. Nearly 8% of teens who drink say they drink five or more cups in a row.

IV.

The younger the person is when starting to drink the more likely they will
develop a problem with alcohol over time.
A. Male teens that drink heavily tend to complete fewer years of education
compared to males that dont.
B. Teens that have experienced alcohol withdrawal at some point in their life
have difficulty with memory.
C. Can cause depression or anxiety to a person.

V.

Binge drinking can be associated with many health problems later in life.
A. Unintentional injuries that include falls, burns, car crashes, drowning, etc.
B. Intentional injuries include sexual assault like rape, domestic violence to
oneself or another, and firearm injuries.
C. Alcohol Poisoning leading to death.
D. Unintended pregnancy and or children born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder.
