Alcohol and Mercury Thermometers

A Mercury Thermometer

An Alcohol Thermometer

An alcohol thermometer differs from a mercury thermometer in many ways, but there
are many things that are similar. An alcohol thermometer and a mercury thermometer are
alike in their functions to measure and detect temperature in all kind of things, and both of
them are made of glass. Not only an alcohol thermometer, but also a mercury thermometer
generally has a celcius scale. An alcohol thermometer has a bulb at one end, and so does a
mercury thermometer.
The range of an alcohol thermometer is from -115 oC to 80 oC, while a mercury
thermometer measures temperature from -38.83 oC to 357 oC. Compared with a mercury
thermometer, an alcohol thermometer is less expensive. Unlike a mercury thermometer, the
contents of an alcohol thermometer is less toxic and will evaporate away quickly. Since a
mercury has a higher boiling point than an alcohol, a mercury thermometer can be used to
measure higher temperature, on the other hand an alcohol thermometer measures lower
temperature.
