LOS ANGELES (AP) —
John Wooden, college basket-
ball’s gentlemanly Wizard of
Westwood who built one of
the greatest dynasties in all of
sports at UCLA and became
one of the most revered coaches
ever, died Friday night. He was
99.
The university said Wooden
died Friday night of natu-
ral causes at Ronald Reagan
UCLA Medical Center, where
he had been hospitalized since
May 26.
With his signature rolled-up
game program in hand, Wooden
led the Bruins to 10 NCAA
championships, including an
unmatched streak of seven in a
row from 1967 to 1973.
Over 27 years, he won 620
games, including 88 straight
during one historic stretch, and
coached many of the game’s
greatest players — including
Bill Walton and Lew Alcindor.
But the Wizard’s legacy
extended well beyond that.
He was the master of the
simple one- or two-sentence
homily, instructive little mes-
sages best presented in his
famous “Pyramid of Success,”
which remains must-read mate-
rial, not only for fellow coaches
but for anyone in a leadership
position in American business.

Library ready to ‘Make a Splash ...’

DELPHOS — This sum-
mer, the Delphos Public
Library is bringing the beach to
young readers in the Summer
Reading Program with this
year’s “Make a Splash—
Read” theme. Children’s
librarian Denise Cressman
says there’s a lot of beach and
aquatic inspired fun in store
for participants.
“This year we’ll have lots
of water and beach-inspired
activities and the kids will
learn about water mammals,
ocean life and things of that
nature,” Cressman said.
“There will be some focus on
the Ohio water-ways, rivers
times because it allows more
kids the chance to come.”
The reading program sign-
up will be from 9 a.m. until 3
p.m. Tuesday but Cressman
says if participants can’t make
it, any day of the week after
that is fine.
“During sign-up they’ll

get everything they need for
the program and there will be
several activities for them to
have fun with. I’m also plan-
ning on having some water-
melon for them,” she said.
“We have two groups, the
first is for ages 3-6, or anyone
who hasn’t gone through kin-
dergarten yet. The pre-school
group has storytimes at 10 and
11 a.m. on Mondays and 6:30
on Thursdays for 45 minutes.
Parents can choose which time
they’d like to take their kids to
go to.”
For the older group, the
K-5 group, Cressman says the
program provides motivation.
“The older kids have read-
ing incentives. They keep read-
ing records and keep track of
how many minutes they spend
reading,” she said. “This is
best for leveling the playing
field because it benefits the
voracious reader and the little
guy who struggles as well. The
biggest incentive for them is
the pool party at the end of the
summer. To be able to attend
the pool party they need to
have read 90 minutes in each
of the 6-week periods.”

“For Family Night this
year we’re going to have

madness on Fridays this year

members, the most we’ve
ever had. The problem with
the movie madness this year
was there weren’t a lot of
decent movies for kids being
released.”

“We’re hoping the kids will
really enjoy this year’s theme.
We’re throwing in some learn-
ing and taking punch at reading

Hospital center

VAN WERT — To ensure
quality health care at Van
Wert County Hospital, the
commissioners here have
drafted a proposal to transfer
the deed to the Van Wert
County Hospital Association,
which rents the facility from
county government. The
association owns its materi-
als and is responsible for its
payroll but conducts business
in a building and on grounds
it doesn’t own.
The situation was created
in the 1950s when the asso-
ciation formed and was given
land by a farmer. The asso-
ciation could not raise pri-
vate funds for construction,
so it approached the commis-
sioners and struck a deal. In
exchange for selling the land
to the county for $1, commis-
sioners placed a $1.2 million
bond issue on the ballot for
construction. Voters approve
the measure for a three-story
hospital and donated funds
for its fourth floor.
Because the county is
in financial straits, several
department directors who
have laid off employees have
voiced disapproval of the pro-
posed $1 transaction. One of
the more vocal, Prosecutor
Charles Kennedy, wants
commissioners to sell the
property to the association for
$1.2 million. Commissioner
Harold Merkle says those
who operate the hospital have
turned the initial $1.2 mil-
lion investment into a large
financial gain and do not owe
a repayment.
“The hospital association
is one and the same as county
residents because any resi-
dent can join the association
for $1. The taxpayers are the
association; I want to make
that clear. Back in the 1950s,
the hospital association came

money or the authority to put
a levy on the ballot. The acres
were sold for $1 and the same
residents who are the asso-
ciation approved the bond.
Since that time, commission-
ers appointed a hospital com-
mission made up of residents
from throughout the county.
The commission leased the
property back to the asso-
ciation — the citizens of Van
Wert County — for $1 a year.
No money from the general
fund has gone into the facility
since that time. However, the
hospital association has taken
that facility and operated it
efficiently. The citizens of
Van Wert County have vol-
untarily sat on the board of
trustees without pay and have
grown that $1.2 million into
about $39 million at the pres-
ent time,” he said.

Every summer when
Mother’s Day and Father’s
Day roll around, I try my
best to honor my parents the
way they both deserved to be
honored. I’ve learned over
the years that nothing – no
matter how hard I try or what
I manage to accomplish for
them on these days — could
ever come close to demon-
strating to them the love and
gratitude I have for Walt and
Marsha Mangen for raising
me, loving me and nurturing
me from the first breath of
air I took.
I have more than enough
idyllic memories from my
childhood, thanks to the fine
folks who conceived me,
that I have never taken for
granted — or tried not to,
anyway — the reality that I
really had a great, Norman
Rockwell-illustrated child-
hood. Although I’m sure it
was put on the table a time or
two, I am particularly thank-
ful for my parents for not
going through with disowning
me for any of the times they
caught me smoking in my
bedroom/drinking their beer
or liquor underage/throw-
ing parties at their house and
inviting my entire graduating
class when they were out of
town. Thank you for keeping
me, Mom and Dad — with-
out you, I’d have been liv-
ing in a cardboard box upon
high school commencement.
Furthermore, I promise to
pay back the approximately
one million dollars I owe you
from over the years.

often they occur. My thanks
to the Master Gardeners who
have spent a great deal of
time and effort beautifying
a colorful retreat on Main
Street and for the kindness
they extended to me the other
evening.
Gardening, flowers and
foliage have been the sub-
jects of numerous stamp
issues throughout our history.
The 2-cent Arbor Day Issue
of 1932 commemorates what
was then a Nebraska State
holiday. The founder of Arbor
Day Julius Morton celebrated
the first Arbor Day on April
10, 1872.Amazingly, over
one million trees were plant-
ed on that day. According
to Morton, the planting of
trees was to provide shade,
shelter, fruit and nuts, fuel
and beauty for the residents
of this once virtually treeless
state. During the 1870s, this
holiday was adopted by many
of the neighboring states and
served as a catalyst for the
lobbying efforts that forced
the Post Office Department
to select this celebration for a
stamp issue. Of note were the
efforts of then Representative
John Morehead of Nebraska
along with Congressmen
from the Midwest. The First
Day of Issue of this stamp
took place on April 22, 1932,
which marked the 100th anni-
versary of the birth of Morton.

at my house in the first grade
and one of my friends got
hurt rolling down the side
of the hill our house stood
on. We all went inside and
as my mom put a Band-Aid
on my friend’s cheek (who
also happened to be the pret-
tiest girl in the class), my
friend told my mom, “You’re
pretty!” My mom’s face lit up
as she replied, “Thank you!”
I discerningly looked at my
mom’s clear greenish eyes,
perfect skin and thought, ‘The
prettiest girl in school thinks
MY MOM is pretty? Hey...
my mom IS pretty.’ She had
always just been “my mom,”
but it was then I realized she
was also her own woman. A
woman I wanted to be when
I got older. She’s always dis-
pensed advice freely, advice
I didn’t always want to hear,
although as soon as I had
kids of my own, I figured out
there really was something to
all the stuff she’s been saying
since my birth. And it is actu-
ally smart stuff.
Some of my earliest mem-
ories are of my dad tucking
me in bed and giving me a
kiss good night. I remember
that his mustache always hurt
when it scratched against my
face, and I told him so. So he
shaved it. My dad smoked
when I was very little and I
remember seeing him do it
once on a friend’s boat. My
kindergarten teacher told us
smoking is bad and I came
home and asked Daddy to
quit. So he quit. He’s always
done whatever it takes to
make me happy, at his own
expense, bottom line. And I
am eternally grateful.
We don’t always agree,
as we are equally passionate
and stubborn about certain
issues (politics, for one) and
we are generally polar oppo-
sites in our views. This has
made for some conversations
throughout the years that
have not ended well. Even
though I’m a grown woman
with children of my own, he’s
still my daddy and when my

I recall reading an article
that was sent to me some time
back about this very stamp
issue. It depicts two children
— a boy and girl — planting
a tree in what turned out to be
their front lawn. The children
were alive at the time of the
issuance; a rule to exclude
living people on stamps was
not in effect at that time.
As one would imagine, the
selection process for stamp
images for postage and postal
stationery was affected by the
political climates in Congress.
To help curb that trend, a
Citizens’ Stamp Advisory
Committee was established
in 1957. According to their
charter the Committee pro-
vides the Postal Service with
a “breadth of judgment and
depth of experience in various
areas that influence subject
matter, character and beauty
of postage stamps.”
This committee comprises
a maximum of 15 members
who come from a wide range
of educational, historical, and
professional backgrounds.
Each of these members
serves at the discretion of
the Postmaster General. By
design, the committee meets
four times a year to review the
tens of thousands of sugges-
tions that are mailed in by the

proud. I know he felt the
same way.
My parents were both
present when my first daugh-
ter, Adele, was born. After
the final push and those first
healthy baby cries, while the
medical professionals were
cleaning up my newborn
daughter, I looked across the
hospital room at my parents,
smiling, crying and embrac-
ing in the joy of this new
life, life that came from me,
which came from them. And
it was the best moment of my
existence. It was then that
the meaning of every second
of every hour of every day
up until that point was sud-
denly crystal clear. I knew
then that this is what it’s all
about. These are the moments
we live for. Everything made
sense; what I was feeling is
what they felt when I was
born, and every glorious
moment I have with my kids
I appreciate doubly because
I can now see it through
their eyes, the good and bad
days, the rare and wonderful
moments, the highs and lows
of parenting. And all of this
experience I speak of, every
day of life that’s been given,
I owe to them. Tell your par-
ents how you feel before it’s
too late. If you’re feuding,
see if you can find it in your
heart to forgive and resolve it.

essence is taken into account
by the committee not just the
interests of stamp collectors.
Interestingly enough, this
process has been modified in
recent years with the ability
to upload your own selected
image and have it printed
onto legal postage, right there
in your home or office. I
doubt this concept was ever
even thought about when
stamps were first invented
in the 1840’s by Sir Roland
Hill.

suggestions, the rules of
selection and more informa-
tion about the people who
make the rules.

Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals
on Friday night.
Coming off an overtime win,
the Flyers are trying to even the
series at 2 games apiece and pull
within two wins of their first
championship since the second
of consecutive titles in 1975.
Just five seconds into
Philadelphia’s second power-
play opportunity, Richards
skated behind the net, stole the
puck from defenseman Niklas
Hjalmarsson and backhanded a
shot past Antti Niemi for his
seventh goal of the playoffs and
a 1-0 lead.
Carle scored his first goal of
the postseason late in the first,
wristing a shot from inside the
right circle to give the Flyers
their first two-goal lead of the
series.
Chicago cut it to 2-1 when
Patrick Sharp’s slap shot
deflected off Flyers defenseman
Braydon Coburn’s stick and slid
past Michael Leighton with 1:28
left in the period.
But Claude Giroux made it
3-1 just 51 seconds later with
his 10th goal of the playoffs.
Kimmo Timonen set it up with a
nifty pass to a wide-open Giroux,
who was alone at the side of the
net. Giroux scored the winner in
OT Wednesday night.
The Blackhawks haven’t won
it all since 1961. But the odds
favor Chicago. Only two of the
previous 33 teams that lost the
first two games on the road came
back to win. The Penguins did it
last year, beating Detroit on the
road in Game 7 after trailing the
series 2-0 and 3-2.
An orange-clad, sellout crowd
rocked the Wachovia Center and
gave the Flyers a Philly-style
home-ice advantage. They booed
the Blackhawks when they skat-
ed out and taunted Niemi by
chanting “An-tti! An-tti!”
Led by Leighton, the Flyers
skated onto the ice to the obliga-
tory “Rocky” theme song. Fans
roared when Lauren Hart, the
daughter of longtime former
Flyers broadcaster Gene Hart,
sang “God Bless America,” alter-
nating lyrics with Kate Smith,
who was on a video image.
Smith’s rendition of the song has
been a rallying anthem for the
Flyers since the mid 1970s. The
Flyers entered with an 87-22-4
record when Smith sang.
Many hockey pundits pre-
dicted this finals matchup in
the preseason, but it sure didn’t
seem likely a few months ago
when Philadelphia changed
coaches from John Stevens to
Peter Laviolette and was 14th in
the 15-team East.
The Flyers needed a shoo-
tout victory in the regular-
season finale against the New
York Rangers just to get in the
playoffs, overcame numerous
injuries to key players and kept
their run going with an historic
comeback against Boston in the
second round.
The seventh-seeded Flyers
knocked off New Jersey in five
games and then staged one of
the greatest comebacks in sports
history by rallying from both a
3-0 series deficit and 3-0 hole
in Game 7 to beat the Bruins
on Simon Gagne’s power-play
goal. They beat Montreal in five
games to reach the finals for the
first time since 1997.
Chicago’s road to the
finals was much easier. The
Blackhawks finished second
in the West and breezed past
Nashville and Vancouver before
sweeping top-seeded San Jose in
the conference finals.
Both teams made lineup
changes. Chicago forward
Andrew Ladd returned after
missing three games with an
undisclosed injury he sustained
in Game 4 of the Western
Conference finals. Adam
Burish sat out to make room
for Ladd. The Blackhawks
also swapped out defensemen,
inserting Nick Boynton into
the lineup for the first time
this postseason. He replaced
Jordan Hendry.
The Flyers sat enforcer Dan
Carcillo and put James van
Riemsdyk back in after sitting

Masterson finally wins, Indians beat White Sox

Masterson (1-5), acquired
from Boston last July 31 in
the Victor Martinez trade,
hadn’t won in 17 starts since
beating the Los Angeles
Angels on Aug. 20. He came
within two of the club-record
13 straight losses set by Guy
Morton in 1914.
His streak-buster wasn’t
pretty — five hits, six walks
and two hit batters in 5 2-3
innings — but it finally gave
the last-place Indians some
good news.
They would have had a
perfect game pitched against
them Wednesday if not for an
umpiring mistake. They were
routed by Detroit the next
day. And a few hours before
Friday’s game, All-Star cen-
ter fielder Grady Sizemore
underwent season-ending
knee surgery.
The trip to Chicago came
along at just the right time.
The Indians are 7-3 against
the White Sox, 13-30 against
everybody else.
In losing for the ninth time
in its last 13 home games,
Chicago fell to 23-31.
John Danks (4-5) took a
1-0 lead into the sixth but
couldn’t get out of the inning.
Shin-Soo Choo led off with
a double, Austin Kearns
walked and Russell Branyan
singled to load the bases
before Peralta drove a 3-2
pitch off the left-field wall to
put Cleveland ahead.
After Branyan was thrown
out at home on Travis
Hafner’s grounder, Shelley
Duncan hit an RBI double
and Luis Valbuena chased
Danks with a run-scoring sin-
gle to make it 4-1.
Danks, who allowed four
runs on nine hits in 5 1-3
innings, is 1-5 with a 5.05
ERA since going 3-0 with a
1.55 ERA in April. He has
a 3-6 career record against
the Indians, including 0-4 at
home.
The only run off Masterson
came on Alexei Ramirez’s
fourth-inning homer, but the
White Sox had multiple bas-
erunners every inning against
him. Duncan’s diving catch
in left saved two runs in the
second.
In the sixth, Masterson
walked Mark Kotsay on
four pitches and hit Carlos
Quentin with a 2-1 delivery,
but A.J. Pierzynski grounded
into a double play on the next
pitch. After Ramirez walked,
reliever Frank Herrmann
made his major league debut
and got Gordon Beckham to
fly out.
Herrmann was called
up earlier in the day from
Triple-A Columbus, where
he had a 0.31 ERA and fin-
ished with a scoreless streak
of 27 1-3 innings.
The 26-year-old right-
hander immediately helped
the AL’s most-generous
bullpen (5.58 ERA entering
Friday), retiring all four bat-
ters he faced. Jensen Lewis
and Rafael Perez followed
with a scoreless inning each.
Peralta made it 6-1 in the
seventh with another two-run
double. In the eighth, Kearns
had a two-run homer and
Trevor Crowe added a two-
run triple.
Peralta also singled twice,
while Kearns and Valbuena
had three hits apiece.

times, Chris Carpenter has beat-

Carpenter allowed four hits
in eight innings and benefited
from the Reds’ fielding and bas-
erunning woes as the St. Louis
Cardinals pulled into a first-
place tie with Cincinnati in the
NL Central with a 4-1 victory
Wednesday night.
“They’re a good team but
I feel like we’re better,” Reds
second baseman Brandon
Phillips said. “This time we just
beat ourselves instead of them
beating us.”
Matt Holliday homered
and Skip Schumaker, Ryan
Ludwick and Brendan Ryan all
had two hits and an RBI to
back Carpenter, who silenced
the NL’s top offense to help
St. Louis take two of three.
Holliday hit his sixth homer, and
only second at home, leading
off the seventh against Logan
Ondrusek for a 4-1 lead.

FINDLAY — Reid Van Cleve,
38, was recently named as the
new wildlife officer assigned to
Ottawa County, according to
the Ohio Department of Natural
Resources (ODNR) Division
of Wildlife. Wildlife Officer
Van Cleve’s new assignment
follows the retirement of for-
mer long time Ottawa County
Wildlife Officer John Waltos.
“Reid is a great
asset to the law
enforcement pro-
gram in Wildlife
District Two and will
serve the citizens of
Ottawa County well
on all wildlife-related
programs and the
enforcement of fish
and wildlife regu-
lations to protect our wildlife
resources,” said Paul Kurfis,
law enforcement supervisor for
Wildlife District Two in north-
west Ohio.
Van Cleve is from Evansville,
Indiana, and is a 1997 gradu-
ate of Vincennes University.
He started as the wildlife officer
assigned to Monroe County in
2007 after graduating from the
Ohio Wildlife Officer Academy.
Cody Klima, 23, was also
named as the new wildlife offi-
cer assigned to Lucas County.
His new assignment follows
the promotion of former Lucas
County Wildlife Officer Kevin
Newsome to Law Enforcement
Unit B Supervisor, which
includes Lucas County.

It’s not necessary to buy
fancy, expensive fishing equip-
ment to take your father fish-
ing. This time of year, with fish
hanging out in the shallows and
preparing to spawn, a simple
setup will do. An inexpensive
rod and reel combo with tackle
can be purchased at a local
outdoor store for as little as
$20.
Live baits work very well,
such as nightcrawlers for cat-
fish, perch, sunfish and bass or
minnows for saugeye, walleye,
perch and crappie. Maggots
and wax worms are good
choices for panfish. Artificial

Fishing in Ohio has been
great this year and there’s
something to catch in every cor-
ner of the state. The Division of
Wildlife suggests these places,
listed by fish species, for a
great day of fishing.
Walleye - Lake Erie is still
the “Walleye Capital of the
World” with the lake providing
some of the best walleye fish-
ing in the country. Father’s Day
weekend should be outstand-
ing for walleyes in Lake Erie.
Other locations to consider
include C.J. Brown Reservoir
and Pymatuning Lake.
Crappie - Crappies are a
very popular fish because they
are fun to catch and good to
eat. Top places around Ohio
include Pymatuning, Deer
Creek Lake, Alum Creek Lake,
Salt Fork, Indian Lake and
Paint Creek Lake.
Bluegill - There are good
places to fish for bluegill and
other sunfish throughout the
state. Some of the best are
AEP ReCreation Land south of
Zanesville, Acton Lake, Lake
Loramie and Portage Lakes in
Akron.
Saugeys - June is a top
saugeye fishing month. Some
of Ohio’s best saugeye waters
are Indian Lake, Hoover
Reservoir, Salt Fork Lake and
Buckeye Lake.
Largemouth Bass - The
AEP ReCreation Land is hard
to beat for largemouths. Other
good spots are Knox Lake and
Sandusky Bay.
Perch - Lake Erie has been
outstanding for perch in 2010.
Perch can be caught fishing
from shore and from piers off-
shore in the Cleveland area,
Lorain, Huron, Fairport Harbor,
Metzger Pier, the Bass Islands
and off Vermilion.
Catfish - Channel catfish
can be caught in all of Ohio’s
88 counties. Some spots to try
are Rocky Fork Lake, Caesar
Creek Lake, the Ohio River and
its tributaries and Grand Lake
St. Marys.

— Martin Truex Jr. moved
to another team this season
for a better opportunity. He
left behind an open seat at
Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing that
Jamie McMurray was eager
to fill.
After just a third of the sea-
son, both drivers seem far
better off following their
moves.
The two drivers head
to Pocono Raceway this
weekend thick in the hunt
for one of the 12 Chase for
the Sprint Cup champion-
ship berths. Truex is 14th in
the standings, just 14 points
out of Chase contention, and
McMurray is 15th in the stand-
ings and 26 points out.
“I think our chances are
really good,” Truex said of
his Michael Waltrip Racing
team. “I feel like we’re get-
ting stronger each week as
a team. We’ve done a good
job of being consistent up to
this point. We’re constantly
working on trying to be more
competitive, be quicker each
week.”
MWR courted Truex heav-
ily last season, which was an
odd year for the driver. He was
in the final year of his contract
with Dale Earnhardt Inc. and
that deal was absorbed in the
offseason merger with Chip
Ganassi Racing.
Truex had to make a deci-
sion fairly early if he was going
to give the new organization a
chance or test the free agent
market.
The opportunity at MWR,
which was offering team owner
Waltrip’s seat and sponsor, led
Truex to make a change. So
far, he has no regrets about
taking over the No. 56 Toyota
and pairing with crew chief Pat
Tryson, who was lured away
from Penske Racing.
Truex won the Sprint
Showdown qualifying race to
earn a spot in last month’s All-
Star race and he’s got four top-
10 finishes this season. He had
just six top-10s all of last year.
“Hardest part about it was
making the decision, pulling
the trigger to do it,” he said.
“Everything has been going
really well. The team has done
a great job. They’ve got great
leadership. Pat has done a great
job. He’s been easy to work
with. He’s been a lot of fun.
He’s very smart about his race
cars.
“We’ve been having a good
time with it.”
Same goes for McMurray,
who found himself the odd
man out when Roush-Fenway
Racing had to drop a team at
the end of last season to meet
NASCAR’s 4-car mandate. By
the time the decision was made
to let McMurray go, Truex’s
old seat with Ganassi was the
only attractive job still avail-
able.
McMurray had been down
that road before: Ganassi hired
him in 2002 and McMurray
spent the first three years of
his Cup career with that orga-
nization. He twice just missed
making the Chase and fled for
Roush’s team in 2006 with the
expectation of running for a
championship.
That never materialized and
a frustrated McMurray needed
a fresh start this year.
He sure got it, winning
the season-opening Daytona
500 in his first race back with
Ganassi. Although his consis-
tency has not been there this
season, McMurray has three
runner-up finishes, including
Sunday night in the Coca-Cola
600 — a race he might have
won if not for a late caution.
“Every race that we’ve
actually finished without an
issue, we’ve had a top-5 car,”
McMurray said. “We run sec-
ond one week and 30th the
next. It’s just about being a
little bit more consistent.”
But McMurray has been

Two bone-jarring pileups in
Cup races the past two years
helped precipitate the largest
improvement project at the sto-
ried track since 2005.
In the section known as
the inner loop (turns 5-8),
the gravel trap was replaced
with a paved runoff area and
a SAFER (Steel and Foam
Energy Reduction) barrier was
installed along the interior con-
crete barrier wall.
The grass area in turn 9,
known as the carousel turn,
also was removed and paved to
form an extended runoff area,
a rumble strip was added, the
existing guard rail system was
pushed back about 25 feet, and
sand barrels have replaced the
tire barriers that contributed to
last year’s crash.
In turn 10, a portion of the
gravel trap was replaced with
another paved runoff area and
the rumble strip was extend-
ed, and a SAFER barrier was
installed in front of the exte-
rior guide rail system in turn
11. All grass areas between
the new SAFER barrier and
the track were paved to help
provide better traction when a
driver is attempting to bring a
car to a stop.
Last August, Kasey Kahne
caused the big wreck when he
dived inside Sam Hornish Jr.
coming out of turn 9 and sent
Hornish off onto the grass on
the left side. Hornish’s No. 77
Dodge then caromed off the
tire barrier and came twirl-
ing like a helicopter blade
back across the racing surface.
Gordon tried to speed through
and slammed the left rear of
Hornish’s car, spinning vio-
lently around into the guard
rail lining the track.
Gordon and Hornish were
uninjured in the crash that also
involved Burton, Joey Logano,
and Andy Lally.
In 2008, a multi-car pileup
occurred coming out of turn 11
at the top of the front straight-
away, when the cars are usually
at full throttle. Pieces of David
Gilliland’s car flew through the
air, Hornish slammed the sand-
filled barriers at the entrance to
pit road, and Bobby Labonte
limped away as Gordon barely
made it through. That race was
halted for 43 minutes.
