Itis important, both to yourself and to the Giants organization, that we establish and maintain positive relationships with the media. This includes the local media as well as regional and national media. 8. One of the reasons that professional football is the most popular sport in America is because of the extensive coverage and exposure received through the media. This includes local newspapers and local radio and television stations as well as national news organizations. The growth of Internet sites has increased the demand, and the exposure, for the NFL. C. The general public develops impressions and opinions from news reports. How you are perceived by the public is often a direct result of your dealings with reporters. You should take advantage of the ongoing opportunity you have to present the image you want to have. Always understand that you are representing a lot more than just yourself when you are talking to the media. What you say is @ reflection on this team and eeeniaanee D. Policies, procedures and guidelines for dealing with the media have been ‘established in order to accommodate requests, while at the same time not interfering with your schedule. The media will abide by the policies and procedures established, and you will be asked to cooperate with reasonable requests. IL. Procedures: ‘A. All reporters have been asked to arrange their interviews through the Giants Communications staff (Peter John-Baptiste and Avis Roper). Interviews will be scheduled for the appropriate interview times or at a time convenient for you. B, Interview times will generally be during your lunch period, whether during the offseason or in-season. During the season the locker room will be open to the media for 45 minutes for interviews during your lunch period. You will be expected to be available for a portion of that time if needed. C. Home phone numbers and cell phone numbers of Giants players and other personnel are not provided to the media. We also suggest thet you not give ‘out your home or cell phone numbers. D. Ifa reporter contacts you directly for an interview outside of the established interview times, you may refer them to the communications department to arrange an interview. B. Ifyou have any questions, problems or concerns about your dealings with the media, contact Pat Hanlon (office 201-939-2036, cell 201-638-4406), Peter John-Baptiste (office 201-935-811 1x1033, cell 201-638-4415), or Avis Roper (office 201-935-8111x1016, cell 201-803-9914). Media Policy - page 3 IV. Postgame interviews A. NEL policy requires that lockerrooms be opened to the media (this includes female reporters) after a brief “cooling off” period, defined as 10-12 minutes, following each game. Use this time to compose yourself. B. As with any interview, think about what you want the headline to be. If you need help, seek out someone from the communications staff. C. Be consistent. Don’t make yourself available for interviews only after a win or only when you have a good game. How you handle adversity will show your character. You will receive less criticism and eam more respect when you establish yourself as “a stand-up guy” during the tough times. D. Be aware that the media you talk to after a game is not just local media. There will be reporters from the opponent’s city and other NFL cities as well. TRAINING CAMP MEDIA SCHEDULE 1. Interview Schedule ‘A. Head coach is available to media for interviews immediately following practice on the practice field. B. Players are available during lunch for interviews. Interviews are scheduled around players? lunch and are done in an interview area outside the players’ cafeteria. C. Media will be notified of any changes or adjustments to this schedule. IL. Media Access A. The media workroom is set up for the media’s use throughout the day. B. The dorm areas housing team personnel are off-limits to the media except on reporting day when accompanied by a representative of the communications department. C. ACall times the training room, locker room and equipment room are off limits to the media. The weight room is available only when arrangements have been made and approved for a specific interview and ‘when the reporter is accompanied by a representative of the ‘communications department. D. The coaches” office area is off-limits to the media at all times. ULL. Practice Sessions ‘A. Practice sessions are open to the media for photographers and reporters. B.
