Criteria for Faculty Evaluation

Teaching
All professors in the department of ASL and Deaf Studies are expected to demonstrate
bilingual proficiency in ASL and English, subject knowledge and the pedagogical skills necessary
to manage a university classroom.
Satisfactory performance indicators
1. Keeps up to date on current trends and effective practices in area of expertise or
content area.
2. Conducts classes in the length as scheduled and attends class regularly, arranges
make up or substitution when circumstance necessitate absence(s). Demonstrates
preparedness to teach.
3. Demonstrates clear and effective communication in the classroom.
4. Intentional use of bilingual strategies in classroom.
5. Provide clear course objectives and syllabus as required by the university.
6. Demonstrates academic rigor in all classes.
7. Provides instruction that reflects an understanding of cultural diversity.
8. Uses appropriate and current assessment of courses (e.g. tests and homework),
teaching methodologies, to meet the students needs.
9. Analyzes assessment data (number 8) to modify curriculum and instruction to
increase instructional effectiveness.
10. Maintain regular office hours (available to students outside the classroom
appointments, etc.)
11. Maintains adequate professional conduct.
12. Participates in meetings
13. Willingly accepts teaching assignments and schedule.
Unsatisfactory
Unsatisfactory is given to faculty members who show significant gaps in the indicators
between 1 through 13.
Satisfactory
Faculty receives satisfactory when the performance indicators are met.
Commendable and Outstanding Performance Indicators
1. Curriculum development/revision within existing courses
2. Use of creative teaching strategies or of educational technologies
3. Teaching of independent study courses
4. Advising for honors thesis or self-directed majors
5. Teaching or developing interdisciplinary (GSR) courses
6. Teaching or developing ASL-intensive courses
7. Teaching or developing writing-intensive courses
8. Teaching or developing special topics courses
9. Teaching or developing on-line/hybrid courses
10. Teaching or developing travel-study courses

1-20 above).
Demonstrates ability and willingness to stay current in the field.
Scholarship
As faculty members in the worlds leading department of ASL and Deaf Studies, all faculty
are expected to develop and maintain a research agenda that shapes and leads the production of
scholarly knowledge in the field.
Minimum scholarly, creative activities, research performance indicators
1. Develop or update agenda of scholarly and/or creative activity.
2. Make documented progress in achieving agenda stated in number 1.
3. Provide documented participation in scholarly/creative activity, which contributes to
greater understanding in ones field of academic knowledge.
Unsatisfactory
Unsatisfactory is given to faculty members who show significant gaps in the minimum
performance indicators between 1 through 3.
Satisfactory
Faculty receive an evaluation of satisfactory when the minimum performance indicators
listed above are met, with a score of up to 7 points in the performance indicators listed
below.

Service
The Department of ASL and Deaf Studies expects its faculty to play a vital role in service to the
department, students, university, and the academic and deaf communities.
Minimum service indicators for an evaluation of Satisfactory:
Regular participation in department, faculty, and university meetings and activities
Diligently performs all tasks in service to the department that are either implied by
department membership (e.g., advising students, doing special projects, attending faculty
meetings) or specifically assigned by the chairperson.
Provide documented participation of being an active contributor to the university,
academic, and Deaf communities.
Unsatisfactory
Unsatisfactory is given to faculty members who show significant gaps in the minimum
performance indicators listed above.
Satisfactory
Satisfactory performance is given to those who meet the minimum performance
indicators above.

Commendable and outstanding service performance indicators


The following service performance indicators should be referred to by faculty when
preparing their evaluations. This list is not exhaustive.
Internal Service
Service to the department

Commendable*
Commendable performance is given to those who have a balanced record of service with
significant contributions in particular areas, exceeding satisfactory. This would be given
to someone with documented minimum of 5 indicators of internal service, and one or two
indicators of external service.
Outstanding*
Outstanding performance is given to those who have achieved commendable rating, with
documented service at each level. Faculty members receive an outstanding rating with
documented minimum of 8 10 internal service indicators, and 4 6 indicators of external
service.
*Significant change in internal and external count may occur at discretion of chair and
review committee for executive related services and/or responsibilities.

Criteria for Reappointment


Satisfaction of all faculty guideline requirements for reappointment
Maintaining progress toward terminal degree if not in hand (Pre-tenure track)
No areas of evaluation less than satisfactory
A minimum of a commendable or outstanding evaluation in scholarship or teaching
A department-approved research agenda
Criteria for Tenure
Satisfaction of all faculty guideline requirements for tenure
Completion of terminal degree
No areas of evaluation less than satisfactory
A record of achieving commendable and outstanding evaluations in scholarship and
teaching
A department-reviewed research agenda
Criteria for Promotion to Assistant Professor
Satisfaction of all faculty guideline requirements for reappointment and promotion to
Assistant Professor
No areas of evaluation less than satisfactory
A minimum of a commendable and outstanding evaluation in scholarship and teaching
A department-reviewed research agenda
Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor
Satisfaction of all faculty guideline requirements for tenure and promotion to Associate
Professor
No areas of evaluation less than satisfactory
A record of regularly achieving commendable and outstanding evaluations in scholarship
and teaching (with evidence of published works).
Progress on a department-reviewed research agenda.
Criteria for Promotion to Professor
Satisfaction of all faculty guideline requirements for tenure and promotion to Professor
No areas of evaluation less than satisfactory
A record of regularly receiving commendable and outstanding evaluations in scholarship
and teaching
A department-approved research agenda
Completion of significant publishing record, which may include book or video
productions (by a recognized publishing house).
