This report is based on the best process selected from the two which was

compared in Part 1. After studying and exploring two processes, selection was
made in terms of profitability, environmental impact and safety issues presented
by the process. As summarized before in Part 1, the conventional synthesis
method was chosen over the direct synthesis method due to it being the process
which got tested in real life on an industrial scale. Although this process was
proved to be less cost effective, environmental friendly and safe process, it was
concluded that a process in operation is more reliable than an untested one.
The conventional synthesis method utilizes eight significant equipment, a
mixer, a pump, a heater, a heat exchanger, a catalytic reactor, a cooler, and two
distillation units. The process begins with methanol, the chosen feedstock for this
process, being fed into the mixer. The stream released from the mixer is run
through a pump for a higher pressure into the methanol heater to get heated.
This stream is then entered into a heat exchanger, where a catalytic reactor
recycles the catalyst back and forth. The outcome stream of the heat exchanger
was cooled in the cooler which then passes the stream through a distillation unit.
Dimethyl ether (DME) is distilled out as gas from the upper stream while the
lower stream was sent to another distillation unit. Water is got rid out as liquid
through the downstream of the distillation unit while gas from the upstream,
which may contain trace amounts of DME is recycled into the mixer to be re
process to avoid wastage.
