Let the strain matrix be defined as follows:

1000 500 0
[] = 500 2000 0 10-6

0

E = 10 106 psi
= 0.3
a. For this isotopic material, what are the stresses and strains in a
coordinate whose x axis is 45 away from the x1 axis and the x - y
plane lies in the x1 - x2 plane.
b. What are the principal stresses and strains and where are they located?
2.

A 50 mm cube of graphite-polymer composite (see Table 2.1) is extended

in the 1 direction by 0.50mm and is constrained to prevent contraction in
the 3 direction. In the 2 direction there is no constraint, i.e. it is free to
deform in the 2 direction.
a. What is the change in dimension in the 2 direction?
b. Determine the stresses in the 1 and 3 directions required to cause these
deformations.

3.

Let the engineering strains ( & ) be defined as follows in the x, y ,z coordinate

system:

0
1500 800

0 10-6
[] = 800 400

a. For the material properties for graphite-polymer composite (see table

below), what are the stresses in the material?
b. What are the stresses and the strains at 30 degrees to the x axis (axis is
x-y-z)?

4. Describe the fabrication process used to make a laminated composite structure

similar to what is used on the Boeing 787 composite fuselage. A general
description will suffice.
