a) The chemical equation of the reaction at Stage II

is
2SO (g) + O (g) <---> 2SO (g)
No. of moles of O = 48g/32
= 1.5 mol
No. of moles of SO = 1.5 mol x 2
= 3 mol
Volume of SO = 3 mol x 24 dm

mol1

= 72 dm

b) The effect is acid rain can decreases the pH of

the soil. Moreover, acid rain can causes lakes and
rivers become acidic. Furthermore, acid rain also
corrodes buildings and metal structures. The way
to overcome the problem is by using low-sulphur
fuels to reduce the amount of sulphur dioxide
released into the air. Next, remove sulphur dioxide
from the waste gas before it is emitted into the
atmosphere. Besides that, neutralize the acidic soil

and water by treating them with calcium oxide

(lime), calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate.
