RCS
Radar cross section is defined as the ability of a target under consideration to reflect signals in a definite direction. Or it can be defined as the ratio of the
scattered field bya target to the incident field in a particular direction. In terms of electric field vectors, it can be given as:

Where = RCS of target

R = Distance of the target from Radar antenna
Es = Scattered electric field in a given direction
Eo = Incident electric field on the target.
Now, In terms of target cross- section and shape, RCS can be given as
= Projected cross section Reflectivity Directivity
Projected cross section: The area of the target intercepted by the Radar
Reflectivity: The measure of intercepted power reflected by the target. It is a material property.
Directivity: The energy reflected towards the antenna compared to an isotropic reflector.
RCS is a scalarquantity. The unit of RCS is square meter. It represents area intercepted by Radar.
When expressed in decibels, unit becomes dBSm
dBSm = 10log10 (x m 2 /1m 2 )
The greater the amount of reflection from the target towards antenna, the greater is the RCS.
