B.S. 1052 : 1942 ‘ WAR EMERGENCY BRITISH STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR MILD STEEL WIRE FOR GENERAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES FOREWORD This War Emergency British Standard has been prepared in response to a request received from the Ministry of Production in order to co-ordinate the requirements for wire for general engineering purposes and provide a Standard which can be used by Government Departments. It covers wire in six different finishes and in sizes from 40 S.W.G. to %e in. diameter or equivalent cross-section. SPECIFICATION DEFINITIONS 1. a. Wire Rod shall denote rolled mild steel capable of being drawn into wire. b. Wire or ‘hard drawn wire’ shall denote cold drawn or cold rolled mild steel wire of any form of cross-section. c. Coil shall denote one continuous length of wire or rod as drawn or rolled, in the form of a coil. d. Length shall denote a straight piece of drawn or rolled wire cut to a specified length. e. Bundle shall denote two or more coils or a number of lengths pro- perly bound together. f Parcel shall denote any quantity of finished wire whether in coils or bundles presented for examination and test at any one time. SCOPE 2. This British Standard applies to mild steel wire for general engineering purposes, from 40 S.W.G. to %s in. in diameter, or equivalent cross- sectional area. S FINISH 3. The finish of wire shall be (a) annealed, (6) annealed, cleaned and limed, (c) bright, (@) galvanised, (e) coppered, (f) tinned, as specified by the purchaser. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS 4. The wire sball show on analysis not more than 0-06 per cent of sulphur or of phosphorus. S N B.S, 1052 : 1942 QUALITY OF WIRE 5. All finished wire shall be well and cleanly drawn to the dimensions specified or required, shall be sound and free from splits, surface flaws, rough, jegged and imperfect edges and all other defects, and shall in all respects comply with the tests and requirements herein specified. TOLERANCE ON SIZES 6. The following tolerances on sizes shall be permitted : 7 7 Finish of Wire | Size of Wire Tolerance | All finishes other than So in. down to12S.W.G. | + 0-002 in. galvanised All finishes other than | Below 12 S.W.G. down to | + 0-001 in. galvanised | 16 SNW.G. Galvanised | all's “£266 per cent with a alls ; minimum of 0-001 in. When necessary other tolerances may be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer. In the case of sections other than round, the tolerance shall be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer, TENSILE TESTS 7, The ultimate tensile stress of the wire shall be between the following limits : Annealed | - Mild drawn) 20 to 32 tons per sq. in. Hard drawn : 32 to 60 tons per sq. in. The purchaser shall specify the maximum and minimum limits of ultimate tensile stress of the wire. For gauges 18 and thicker, these limits shall not differ by less than 5 tons per sq. in. in the case of annealed and mild drawn steel wire, or by not less than 10 tons per sq. in. in the case of hard drawn steel wire. For gauges finer than 18, the minimum ultimate tensile stress only shall be specified. WRAPPING AND BEND TESTS 8. Wire of circular section and below %c in. diameter shall withstand ing wrapped eight times round its own diameter and being subsequently eo without breaking or splitting of the steel. . 3
