Learning activities (Outline of what you want the students to DO)
(Highlight Literacy/Numeracy) Starter, Discussion: Drawing the symbols of the worlds major religions on the board and to see if the students can name them. 1st Activity: Students to complete worksheet relevant to their level, matching the names to the right symbol. 2nd Activity: Discussion: discuss the meaning of a symbol and how it is different to a sign. Draw a symbol on the board and a sign from the class room, asking students what is the difference between the two and why? Symbols represent something Signs tell you to draw something 3rd activity: Discussion leading to worksheet: Students to discuss, then decide what a symbol is. Then to decide what item, place, or whatever or special to them. Students to then draw up to four items on the sheet and then to write about why these are so special to them. These could be anything; a signed football, a gift from a relative, and so on. 4th activity: Discussion: students to share what they have drawn and the reasons why Plenary: Discussion: summing up the differences between a symbol and a sign, the names of the major religions and what how a symbol can mean be special to different peoples.
