board and to see if the students can name them.
1st Activity: Students to complete worksheet relevant to their level, matching the
names to the right symbol.
2nd Activity: Discussion: discuss the meaning of a symbol and how it is different to
a sign.
Draw a symbol on the board and a sign from the class room, asking students what is
the difference between the two and why?
Symbols represent something
Signs tell you to draw something

what a symbol is. Then to decide what item, place, or whatever or special to them.
Students to then draw up to four items on the sheet and then to write about why
these are so special to them. These could be anything; a signed football, a gift from a
relative, and so on.
4th activity: Discussion: students to share what they have drawn and the reasons
why
Plenary: Discussion: summing up the differences between a symbol and a sign, the
names of the major religions and what how a symbol can mean be special to different
peoples.
