PlannedPreventiveMaintenance('PPM')ormoreusualjustsimplePlannedMaintenance(PM)or
ScheduledMaintenanceisanyvarietyofscheduledmaintenancetoanobjectoritemofequipment.
Specifically,PlannedMaintenanceisascheduledservicevisitcarriedoutbyacompetentandsuitable
agent,toensurethatanitemofequipmentisoperatingcorrectlyandtothereforeavoidanyunscheduled
breakdownanddowntime.[1]
TogetherwithConditionBasedMaintenance,Plannedmaintenancecomprisespreventivemaintenance,
inwhichthemaintenanceeventispreplanned,andallfuturemaintenanceispreprogrammed.Planned
maintenanceiscreatedforeveryitemseparatelyaccordingtomanufacturersrecommendationor
legislation.Plancanbebasedonequipmentrunninghours,datebased,orforvehiclesdistancetravelled.
Agoodexampleofaplannedmaintenanceprogramiscarmaintenance,wheretimeanddistance
determinefluidchangerequirements.AgoodexampleofConditionBasedMaintenanceistheoil
pressurewarninglightthatprovidesnotificationthatyoushouldstopthevehiclebecausefailurewill
occurbecauseenginelubricationhasstopped.
PlannedmaintenancehassomeadvantagesoverConditionBasedMaintenance(CBM)suchas:
easierplanningofmaintenanceandorderingspares,
costsaredistributedmoreevenly,
noinitialcostsforinstrumentsusedforsupervisionofequipment.
Disadvantagesare:
lessreliablethanequipmentwithfaultreportingassociatedwithCBM
moreexpensiveduetomorefrequentpartschange
requirestraininginvestmentandongoinglaborcosts
Partsthathavescheduledmaintenanceatfixedintervals,usuallyduetowearoutorafixedshelflife,are
sometimesknownastimechangeinterval,orTCIitems.
