Introduction to the Orchestra Tyler Harr 1, Time Needed: 25 Minutes Materials Needed: Orchestra Recordings, Handout A, Page 3 in the Guidebook Learning Objective(s): The students will learn the basic families of the orchestra and understand how the different families work together. Assessment(s): The students will identify different instruments in the orchestra. Personal Objective(s): Procedures: A. Greet the Class B, Introduce the Unit: The Instruments of the Orchestra C. Recordings of the Orchestra, Have students give their ideas about each recording or video. a. Haydn, Symphony No. 94 in G Major, IL. “Surprise Symphony”. Explain how it begins with strings, then eventually the whole ensemble comes in. b. Bizet, Farondole From L’Arlesienne, shows whole orchestra playing together at the beginning c. Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 Op. 67. They will hopefully recognize this one! D. Explain how the whole big orchestra is made up of smaller families, Woodwinds, Strings, Brass, and Percussion. Have the students tell you what they know about each family group (strings have bow, brass are shiny, percussion you hit stuff and etc.) E, Using Handout A, have the students in groups try to identify the family that the instrument is a part of, and try to identify the instrument itself. After groups have done this, come back as a whole class and give answers to the flashcards. (Violin, Harp, Cello, Trombone, Horn, Bassoon, Oboe, Clarinet, Tympani, Triangle, Tambourine, Flute, Trumpet, Tuba, Piccolo, Cymbals) 7.
