Abstract

In this project, our goal was to create a water filter that will provide drinkable water to one
million refugees. To retrieve these results, we tested samples of contaminated water using
various methods such as testing the nitrogen amounts and dissolved oxygen. Then we proceeded
to filter the water using our filter and tested the filtered water using physical, chemical, and
biological means. Finally, we inserted the filtered in petri film to test for bacteria and E.coli. The
purpose of this project is to be able to supply one million refugees with drinkable and portable
water. First, we researched on how to filter dirty water into drinkable water and then build a
filtration system that consisted of gravel, cloth, and activated charcoal to get rid of waste and
bacteria. When discussing with our peer members, we found out that the filter was not able to
remove all of the harmful waste and microorganisms. As a result, our water filter could not
properly filter water which means that our water filter cannot support one million refugees. This
shows that we would need change our water filter with the results that we received, so that the
water filter can quickly and efficiently filter water.
