ABSTRACT
Salmia is located about 32 km southeast of Hama and 45 km northeast of Homs, the area is about 6500 km2 , and the population , according
to statistics in 2007 is about 400 thousand people , the climate is
semiarid turns to dry in the eastern parts of the area adjacent to the
territory of the provinces of Raqqa and Homs . The average annual
rainfall is about 300 mm, and becoming low in the east to less than 200
mm, the rate of daily evaporation in summer is 9.2 mm, and the average
of relative humidity annual is 60m.
In the study area, there are water harvesting techniques, particularly the
excavation and the 16-excavations have been created with the aim of
booking and store flood water to quench livestock and irrigating crops in
the desert after the end of the period of rainfall.
The research aims to shed light on the importance of modern technologies
in hydrological studies by relying on decision support systems , to predict
with the suitable locations for the application of rainwater harvesting ,
and to verify the suitability of excavations sites carried out in the area of
salmia, and try to search for other sites based on a number of criteria and
conditions depending on the desired goals , and primarily addressed to the
contribution of these excavations with their selected positions in
groundwater recharge .
We got topography, rainfall, climate, vegetation, community, wells,
geology data, formatted and processed in the GIS, and converted them
into slices , in addition to creating database in the study area .
The process of digitization of topographic map paper of the study area
has been completed , then converted to digital form and obtained the
radial coordinate matrix, and chosen30m pixcel, using spatial analysis
tool in GIS.Also, It has been completed the stages of hydrological
modeling , which included a number of operations to select the direction
of flow , streams, watersheds, pour points by using the hydrological
modeling tool in GIS.
Water volumes in watersheds were calculated as runoff coefficient 0.03
and average annual rainfall equal to 301 mm.
According to intersection of geological, watersheds , vegetation ,
communities slices , and Water volumes in watersheds , it was studied
each basin separately, evaluated excavations sites, suggested new sites
depending on the need water will be used for it.
The study has been found that:

Determining 20 sites for locating new excavations in Salmia.

Through the assessment of the excavation in Salmia , we found that
most of them have been established in suitable locations serving
the locality community near the excavation.
Based on Google Earth, it has been verified matching excavations
in places, streams that have been obtained using GIS software with
reality.
