Course Objectives:

To make students understand the basics of networking and its concepts

To develop practical networking knowledge and skills in a professional environment with


emphasis on hands-on approach.

To help students acquire fundamental knowledge about designing, building and


maintaining a computer network in the real world

Unit I
Basic concepts : Components of data communication, Standards and organizations,
Network classification, Network topologies, Network protocol, Layered network
architecture, Overview of OSI reference model, Overview of TCP/IP protocol suite
Unit II
Physical Layer : Cabling, Network interface card, Transmission media devicesRepeater, Hub, Bridge, Switch, Router, Gateway
Unit III
Data Link Layer : Framing techniques, Error control, Flow control protocols, Shared
media protocols - CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA
Unit IV
Network Layer : Virtual circuits and datagram approach, IP addressing methodsSubnetting,Routing algorithms (adaptive and non-adaptive)
Unit V
Transport layer : Transport Services, Transport layer protocol of TCP and UDP,
Congestion control, Quality of service
Unit VI
Application layer and network security : Application layer protocols and services
- Domain name system, HTTP, WWW, Telnet, FTP, SMTP, Common terms of network
security, Firewalls, Virtual private networks
