Cast of Characters
Kimmy McGaughy: 17 years old, short brown hair, very plain
jane looking, very indecisive about almost everything,
anti social with people she doesnt know well, loud when
with friends and people shes comfortable with
Kaira Vanderwaal: 16 years old, medium-length dark brown curly
hair that changes into a vibrant red at the end, more on the
quiet side unless shes angry, a volleyball player, likes to sing
but doesnt think shes good enough

Echo Winter: 16 years old, long black hair with green tips,
short, wears army boots, very sassy, musician, doesnt have
very much patience
Jayden Hart: 17 years old, has gone to school with these girls
for many years, Kairas best friend, recently got a girlfriend,
Echo and Kimmy arent exactly his number one fans
Act I, Scene I: IHOP
Echo Winter sits in a booth waiting for her food to come,
drumming her thumbs against the table anxiously to the beat of
her music. Kaira Vanderwaal is ignoring the constant phone calls
that are coming from her phone, while taking large but slow
bites of her raspberry crepes. Kimmy McGaughy sits across the
table, still having trouble deciding what she wants from the
menu.
Kaira: Are you ever gonna order?
Kimmy: Dont rush me. If I order something I dont like, I wont
finish it. Twenty dollars down the drain!
Echo: You wont ever get to order if our waiter doesnt come
back. Like honestly, what is he doing? Its been almost twenty
minutes, Im starving. Any longer and Ill just eat my napkin!
Kaira: Well arent you two a couple of negative Nancys
Echo: At least we arent avoiding our best friend just because he
got a girlfriend
Kaira: (sarcastically) Oooo you sure got me and Im not
ignoring. Im at dinner and its rude to take phone calls.
Kimmy: Were at IHOP ordering pancakes and crepes at 7 oclock at
night, its really not that fancy of a dinner.
Kaira: Will you just order already? Its not your college
education, just pick something!
Kimmy: Havent I already been over this?
Echo: Guys, seriously, calm down.

Echo shouts in excitement at the sight of her waiter coming with

her food.
Echo: FOOD! Its your time to shine Kimmy, order up.
Kaira: (speaking with a mouth full of crepe) Go Kimmy! We believe
in you.
Kimmy: Okay! Im ready!
The waiter walks up to the table and sets down Echos plate of
food before turning and looking at Kimmy.
Waiter: You ready to order?
Kimmy nods her head very slowly as she stares at the menu. The
waiter pulls out his pad of paper and a pen, waiting for her to
speak.
Kimmy: Im not ready!
Both Kaira and Echo sigh loudly. Kimmy glares at the two of them
before looking at the waiter.
Kimmy: Okay, Im gonna do the french toast combo. Strawberry
banana french toast, scrambled eggs, one bacon, one sausage, and
a glass of milk.
Kimmy shuts the menu and hands it back to the waiter before
folding her hands on top of the table.
Echo: Finally
Kaira: So, whats the deal with Ginger? Does anybody know why
shes been missing school?
Kimmy: I heard from Shannon, who heard from Josh, that Danny got
her pregnant. But you didnt hear it from me!
Echo: We all knew that was just a matter of time. Why do you care
anyway?
Kaira: Well, If she cheated on my best friend with that dumb jock
Danny and got herself pregnant, then Id kind of like to be the
one that tells him.

Kimmy: You want to be the one that breaks his heart?

Kaira: Well, Ive known Jayden since we were kids, it might
cushion the blow. I didnt want to hurt him, okay!
Echo: Its okay, we didnt say that you did
As the girls were sitting in the awkward silence, a large white
light came through the windows leaving an IHOP-lettered shadow
on the floor. Everyone turns to look at the windows but they
become blinded as the light becomes brighter. A few seconds pass
and the light dies.
Kimmy: Woah, wait! Whered everybody go?
The girls look around to find the restaurant empty. They stand
from the table and Echo goes to the window looking around at the
parking lot.
Kaira: Be careful! We dont know what is going on, and we need to
stay together.
Echo: I was just going to see if anyone was outside, Im not
making a break for it or anything.
Kimmy and Kaira go over to the kitchen door, slowly push it
open, and look inside only to find pots and pans, making loud
noises, and over-cooking food. Kimmy sees her dinner burning
over a butter-filled pan.
Kimmy: Well, I didnt want the french toast anyway
End of Scene
Act I, Scene II
In this post-apocalyptic scene, the girls make their way
down the sidewalk of the abnormally silent streets of their
hometown. They notice parked cars sitting in the road and hear a
faint sound of a child crying. When they reach the four-way
crossing, the traffic lights still seem to change. Kaira and
Kimmy seem slightly spooked, but Echo is looking through car
windows and yelling out to see if anyone replies.

Kimmy: Where is that coming from?

Echo: Who cares? Its creepy, and probably a trap.
Kimmy: A child could be in pain! If someone is hurt, we need to
help them!
Kaira: Relax, you two. Unless you guys have another plan, we can
go check out the where that sound is coming from, and then head
down to the Police station. Okay?
Echo: Fine whatever.
Kimmy: Hey guys, I think the noise is coming from the bank.
As the girls enter the bank, the sound gets louder and they head
in the direction it is coming from. It leads them to the
manager's office, and they find a little boy, probably 3 or 4,
crying in the corner. Kimmy walks towards him and he reaches up,
requesting to be held. She picks him up.
Kimmy: Hi, its okay Whats your name?
The little boy doesnt say anything, but clings to Kimmy.
Echo: Can we go to the police station now?
Kaira: Well have to take him with us, he has nobody to take care
of him.
The girls then head out of the bank with the boy and make their
way down the street.
Kimmy: Why would anyone leave a little boy alone like that?
Echo: Kimmy, I dont think anyone would intentionally leave their
son alone like that. His parents probably disappeared like
everyone else.
Kaira: Even though he hasnt spoken, Im pretty sure he can
understand us. I dont think we should be talking about it right
in front of him.
Echo: The Police Station is right up the street there. I wonder
who else is left

Kairas phone begins vibrating in her pocket and all the girls
look shocked as she whips it out to answer.
Kimmy: Whos calling you??
Kaira: Jayden (She then answers her phone quickly) Jayden? Oh my
Gosh! Youre still here! What do you mean What do I mean?...
Everyone is missing! Did you not see the light?... The huge white
light that almost blinded me Jayden!
All of the sudden, a truck turns around the corner and almost
hits the girls, barely missing them and then abruptly stops.
Jayden gets out of the driver's side and walks up to them.
Echo: Wow, you should really look where youre going
Kimmy: No kidding! I have a child here in my arms! You couldve
killed us! What were you thinking?!
Jayden: I was thinking that this is some kind of sick joke, or
maybe a prank. My parents car is home, but they arent and
everyone is my neighborhood just disappeared.
Kaira: So, you never saw the light?
Echo: Wait, hold on. You never saw the light? You are the only
other person weve seen since we found this little boy in the
bank, and you just happen to be the only other person alive?
Kimmy: Well, Echo, we dont know if theyre dead Theyre just
gone
Echo: Whatever Jayden, is there something youre not telling us?
Kaira: Please do not tell me you think hes an alien or
something.
Everyone is now looking at Echo, trying to figure out if she is
serious about what she just asked Jayden. A few seconds pass
before Jayden answers and changes the subject.
Jayden: I dont know anything except that this freaks me out. You
guys need a ride to the Police Station? Ive got space

End of Scene
Act II, Scene I
They all walk through the doors of the Police Station, looking
around to see if anyone is home. The only thing they find is one
officer passed out in the middle of the floor. Kimmy gasps and
hands the boy over to Jayden before rushing to the officer's
aid.
Kimmy: Kyle! Kyle, can you hear me? Oh Kyle, please be alive. Why
isnt anyone helping me?
Echo: Ill find a first aid kit.
Kaira: Kyle, as in, your brother? Your brother became a cop?
Kimmy: Is that really whats important right now?
Kaira: Youre right sorry. (She kneels down on the other side
of his body) What do you think is wrong with him?
Kimmy: I dont know, but his head is bleeding, and hes not
waking up.
Jayden: He needs to go to the hospital
Kaira: Jayden we just got here. What if someone comes looking for
answers here and all they see is a pool of blood?
Jayden: Were not doctors. You and Kimmy barely passed Biology,
and we dont even have a band-aid! What do we do instead?
Echo walks back into the room, empty-handed.
Echo: I couldnt find one, well have to take him to the
hospital. If anyone is left there, they can help. Jayden, can you
help carry his body to your truck?
Just like theyve been working together for years, they all help
each other. Kaira takes the boy from Jayden. Kimmy, Echo, and
Jayden each help carry Kyles body through the station doors and
into the bed of the truck. Kimmy gets in the back with him,
while the rest get in the truck and they the drive off towards
the hospital.

Echo: I left a note by the entrance with all of our names on it

saying that we would be at the hospital.
Jayden: Thats smart. (He looks back at Kaira who gives a small
sigh of relief)
Echo: What if this is it? If there is no one at the hospital, and
no one to help Kyle?
Kaira: If we made it, and this little boy made it, then others
had to have made it, too. Well be okay. (She then speaks to the
boy in her arms. She moves his hair from his eyes while he plays
with her necklace) Well be okay
A few moments of silence pass as they maneuver around empty
trucks and cars passing the IHOP they were just eating in less
than an hour ago. The little boy has fallen asleep in Kairas
arms. Echo occasionally turns her whole torso around to make
sure Kimmy hadnt flown out the back amidst all the moving.
Echo: Im kind of worried about Kimmy. She was already scared
enough when her dad became a cop, and then he um
Echo realizes shes been talking out loud. She looks back to
make sure the little boy was still asleep before continuing.
Kaira: Died. On duty, no less. Her mom was never the same. Its
been years, and her mom barely ever gets out of bed. Now her big
brother, her role model, and her hero is in the same spot. She
saw him hurt and I could feel her heart sink. I get it. Im
worried about Kimmy, too.
Jayden: Were here. Echo, will you help me with him?
Echo: Sure.
End of Scene
Act II, Scene II
The three of them carry Kyle in through the emergency entrance
of the hospital. Jayden and Echo are yelling for help. Kaira
follows behind with the little boy asleep in her arms. Kimmy
brings over one of the gurneys and they lay him on it. Jayden
and Echo look into different rooms, trying to find anybody they

can. Kimmy tries her best to help Kyles head wound, but she
cant do much. She covers it with gauze, trying to stop the
bleeding. Kaira sits in a chair across the room, trying to keep
the little boy asleep by covering his ears from all the yelling.
Jayden and Echos yelling is halted by the sound of an
unfamiliar voice coming down the hall paired with loud, running
footsteps.
Echo: Hello? Is there anyone here?
An unfamiliar man comes running into the room, dressed in scrubs
and a white coat, wide eyed and covered in blood. Everyone
halts, but Kaira stands while still covering the little boys
ears from the yelling.
Dr. Jones: THEYRE ALL GONE! YOU CANT STAY HERE, GET OUT
WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
The mysterious doctor bolts for the door, running as fast as he
can.
Kimmy: Wait! My brother needs help. You cant leave...PLEASE!
Kimmy runs after the doctor, barely making it out the door
before Jayden grabs her, stopping her in her tracks.
Jayden: Kimmy! Calm down!
Kimmy struggles against him as tears well up in her eyes. She
stops struggling after a few moments and just breaks down in
tears, sobbing.
Echo: I got it.
Echo calmly, but swiftly walks out the door after the doctor.
Looking in every room as she goes down the hallway, she finally
finds him curled up in a corner mumbling nonsense.
Echo: What is wrong with you? Why wont you help our friend?
The doctor looks up at her, the same expression frozen on his
face.
Dr. Jones: Gone. Theyre all gone.

His voice is just barely a whisper as he sits there, staring at

her, his body rocking back and forth just barely, still curled
up in the corner.
Echo: Do you have anything useful to say? No? Alright.
Echo walks away, slamming the door shut behind her. She heads
back down the hallway to the ER. When she walks in the room, she
stops abruptly at the sight before her. The room is EMPTY. Not a
soul in sight.
End of Scene
Act III, Scene I
Echo walks aimlessly around the hospital looking for her
friends. Stopping by each room, grumbling to herself.
Echo: How are you just going to leave me, in the middle of an
apocalyptic situation with a psycho lunatic doctor. I mean
honestly, its not like IM YOUR FRIEND OR ANYTHING! Jerks.
As she is walking down the hallway, talking to herself,
something suddenly grabs her and yanks her into a room. She
turns as fast as possible and punches Jayden in the face.
Jayden: Ow! What the hell!
Echo: You dont just grab people like that! Where have you been,
you ditched me in the freaking ER.
Kaira: Well, you went and ran after the psycho doctor, and Kyle
was bleeding through hundreds of gauze pads. We needed to stitch
him up.
Echo: Ever heard of leaving a note?
Kaira: Yeah, we did.
Echo: All Im saying is that in the type of situation were in,
we cant afford to split up.
Kimmy: Guys, can we stop bickering about this?! Were together
again, thats what matters!

Both Kaira and Echo ignore Kimmy and continue to argue with each
other. Jayden joins in, yelling about his nose being broken from
getting punched, and Kimmy starts yelling too, trying to get
everyone to shut up. The small boy sitting in a chair in the
corner starts crying loudly.
Jayden: Echo, I think you broke my nose!
Kimmy: Would everyone just shut up! We have more important things
to worry about!
Echo: You guys just left me all alone! I thought you guys were
dead or something!
Jayden: Hello! What about my nose?!
Kaira: No one cares about your stupid nose!
Kimmy: Guys, seriously!
Suddenly, theres a loud crash outside and the room is filled
with silence. They all look at one another as the lights
flicker before the room goes dark.
