AONE Professional Competencies

According to AONE (American Organization of Nurse Excutives) Nurse

Managersnurse leaders with 24 hour accountability and responsibility for a
direct care unit or unitsprovide the vital link between the administrative
strategic plan and the point of care. The nurse manager is responsible for
creating safe, healthy environments that support the work of the health care
team and contribute to patient engagement. The role is influential in creating
a professional environment and fostering a culture where interdisciplinary
team members are able to contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow
professionally. (AONE, 2015)
The AONE competencies for the nurse administrator involves: 1) The
Science: (managing the organization); 2) The Leader Within: (developing the
leader within yourself); and 3) The Art: (leading your employees).

The Science:
The first competency was by working with the Human Resources Director to
gain insight on strategies for recruiting and retaining staff. I have been
involved in performance improvement plans as well as preparing and
reviewing corrective actions with employees. I work with the interdisciplinary
team to ensure quality and safety are being practiced among all employees
and counsel or re-educate when needed to ensure compliance and
understanding. I have done this by relying on my critical thinking skills
learned throughout my years of nursing school as well as on the job
experiences.
The Leader Within:
I take pride in being honest and trustworthy. I take responsibility for the
decisions I make and defend my decisions as needed and adjust as
necessary as a result of new information. I set goals (MSN program) and take
steps to meet those goals. The added knowledge and skills I have learned by
completing the MSN curriculum has allowed me to meet my goal and gain
valuable data as in the process aimed at being a improved leader.
The Art:
I work directly with Human Resources (HR) frequently to complete concise
corrective actions to help employees grow or correct issues, verify
understanding then follow up for compliance. I work with HR for performance
evaluation completion for nursing personnel as well.
